"Mr. Summers had a last-minute business matter and will be here shortly. Alaina is resting in the back with Great-Aunt Rosemary," Mrs. Gable replied.
Lily nodded, heading straight toward the rear of the hall.
Walking down the elegant, historic corridor, she spotted the silhouette of a woman sitting in one of the private rooms.
The figure looked inexplicably familiar—so familiar that a spark of dread ignited in her chest.
She quickened her pace. As she got closer and her vision cleared, she froze in the doorway.
Her purse slipped from her grasp, hitting the floor with a thud.
The blood in her veins seemed to turn to ice, only to boil over a second later.
Hearing the noise, Alaina turned around, meeting her gaze with a cold, composed expression.
"Why are you here?" Lily demanded, stepping over the threshold and charging into the room.
Alaina didn't answer, merely staring at her with icy detachment.
Chaotic thoughts swirled in Lily's mind, the impossible truth staring her right in the face.
She pressed her red lips into a tight line, shaking her head in disbelief. "This is impossible."
Growing up, she had seen every woman Great-Aunt Rosemary had ever paraded in front of Silas.
Every single one of them had been devastatingly gorgeous and hailed from prominent, elite families.
How could this utterly average woman—someone she had always trampled underfoot—possibly catch Silas's eye?
She shook her head in disbelief as her shock rapidly morphed into blistering rage.
"What gives you the right to be here?! Who permitted you to step foot in this place?!" Lily's voice sounded like it was being ripped from her throat, every word dripping with venom.
Alaina stood up, facing her calmly. "Silas and I are legally married. As the lady of this house, why wouldn't I be here?"
