"A bit jealous, aren't we?"
Julian just chuckled.
"If you're jealous, hurry up and find someone yourself," Great-Aunt Rosemary urged, taking the opportunity to nag. "Once Silas and Alaina are fully settled, you won't have any more excuses to dodge my matchmaking."
Julian smiled without answering. He looked back at the striking couple gliding across the dance floor, a fleeting trace of melancholy crossing his eyes.
Having finally survived the opening dance, Alaina let out a massive sigh of relief.
Using a trip to the powder room as an excuse, she slipped out into the garden to hide.
Inside the hall, the music and lively chatter raged on.
But she only wanted a temporary escape to breathe some fresh air.
Holding the flute of champagne a server had just handed her, she gathered her skirt and sat on a garden bench. Staring up at the starry night sky, she downed the drink in one gulp.
The sweet champagne left a suspiciously bitter aftertaste on her tongue, making her frown.
Hearing footsteps approaching, she turned and saw Julian strolling out of the hall.
Julian spotted her immediately.
She hastily pressed a finger to her lips, gesturing for him to keep quiet.
Julian chuckled as he walked over. "What are you doing out here all by yourself?"
Alaina returned his smile. "Just getting some fresh air."
A second later, her vision blurred dizzily. She reached up and rubbed her temples, trying to steady herself.
Noticing her sudden distress, Julian asked with concern, "Are you feeling alright?"
Alaina waved him off quickly. "I probably just drank that too fast. I'm fine, just need a minute to recover."
With that, she buried her head in her hands, desperately trying to fight off the heavy, unnatural sensation washing over her.
Julian's instincts flared. He took the empty glass from her hand, inspected it, and gave it a sniff. His expression instantly darkened.
He immediately pulled out his phone and dialed Zachary Jenkins.
Zachary tracked down Silas without a second's delay.
Silas broke away from the crowd. By the time he reached the garden, Alaina was curled up on the bench, clutching her temples and completely motionless.
