A maid followed him with an umbrella, shouting, "Sir, what are you doing? Sir, the rain is too heavy! You'll get sick like this!"
Ethan ignored her. One hand held the lemon tree while the other frantically clawed dirt back onto its roots with his bare hands.
Suddenly, his hand brushed against something hard. He pushed the muddy water aside and dug out a metal box.
He recognized the metal box.
It was the one he had specially bought, calling it The Affection Box.
He had bought it as a gift for Alaina.
He had said that from then on, he would treat her doubly well, asking Alaina to put a note of every good thing he did into this metal box.
That way, if he ever made her angry in the future, he could use these good deeds to offset it.
He had sworn to definitely fill this metal box, to make it overflow with all their beautiful and happy moments.
He swatted away the umbrella the maid was holding and charged back into the villa.
He ran back to his room, oblivious to his wretched state, and struggled to pry open the metal box with hands frozen stiff by the rain.
The metal box was completely empty. There were no notes, only a single notebook lying inside.
He flipped open the notebook. The first page read: Leave after 99 disappointments.
[The 1st time. Ethan, you broke your promise. You told me to wait for you to have dinner together, but you didn't show up. Do you know how long I spent cooking those dishes? In the end, I had to throw them all into the trash can. You said Lily fainted and you took her to the hospital. Fine, this counts as excusable. I'll note it down and let it go.]
