Julian's eyes showed a deep nostalgia as he spoke softly, "Before my dad died of cancer, he used to laugh and say every extra day he lived was a bonus."
Alaina paused her spoon, looking up at him with a deep sense of empathy.
"He must have been a great man," she said.
Julian nodded. "You just said you wanted to live until the day you win. If my dad were here, he'd definitely give you a thumbs up. He was so open-minded; you two would have been great friends."
Alaina smiled and took a sip of the warm soup. The heat settled in her stomach, soothing the heavy grievance in her heart.
Back at The Summers Estate, the snow on the grounds had been shoveled to the sides of the walkway, making it less slippery than that morning.
Just like always, Mrs. Gable came to greet her. "Ma'am, you're back."
She smiled and nodded. "Has Aunt Rosemary gone to sleep?"
Mrs. Gable covered her expression slightly and replied softly, "When the weather gets cold, her back pain flares up badly, so she rested early."
Alaina simply nodded and asked if they had any herbs like mugwort in the house.
Hearing they did, she asked Mrs. Gable to take her to get some before heading to the kitchen.
She picked out some dried mugwort from the storage and grabbed a few other medicinal herbs.
In the kitchen, she dry-roasted them in a pan.
She then sewed a small pillow out of clean gauze and stuffed the roasted herbs inside.
"Ma'am, what's this? It smells wonderful," Mrs. Gable said, leaning in to smell it.
Alaina handed the herbal pad to her. "Could you find a nice piece of fabric to cover it and give it to Aunt Rosemary? Using this herbal pad on her lower back will help soothe the discomfort."
Mrs. Gable held the pillow. "You're too thoughtful, Ma'am."
She smiled and shook her head, thinking that Aunt Rosemary probably wouldn't want to see her anymore, so this was the least she could do.
Walking back to the main house, she saw the light was still on in Silas's room on the first floor.
