To be fair, given the situation back then, she had been provoked into dropping her filter completely.
Silas continued, "Didn't you say it yourself? Arrogance and confidence are two different things. I've always known you had the ability."
Alaina hadn't expected him to remember that so clearly. The tiny bit of resentment she had been harboring suddenly dissolved.
"Correction, that wasn't our first meeting. Our first meeting was at school. Just admit it, wasn't it?" She brought up the past, eager for confirmation.
Silas stepped half a pace closer, entirely invading her space. His warm breath brushed her ear as he lowered his voice. "You forget the things you should remember, and remember the things you shouldn't."
Alaina froze, catching the unmistakable trace of bitterness in his tone.
She quickly explained, "Even if Silas Summers is ridiculously good-looking, it doesn't mean a person is going to remember him forever. Plus, I'm bad with faces. I really couldn't remember. Recalling it later was an absolute fluke."
Silas stared at her reddening ears, the softness in his eyes deepening. "I always remembered you. I even had people keep tabs on you after graduation. I told the research lab to recruit you for Apex as soon as you finished your studies abroad. But then, you just vanished."
Hearing this, Alaina gave a faint tremble. Not daring to read too much into it, she simply said, "Mr. Summers truly has great foresight. Spotting talent and building a roster so early on."
Silas smiled but said nothing. After a long pause, he finally murmured, "Working with you is my privilege. Project Aegis securing you as its lead is a blessing for the entire industry."
Hearing such rare praise, Alaina tried her best not to look too smug.
"Apex survived this crisis and kept its dignity, all thanks to you," Silas said earnestly. "Is there any personal reward you want?"
Alaina's eyes widened. "I don't need anything personal. Didn't you already promise vacation time and a bonus?"
