The car rolled to a stop at their destination.
Alaina parked and noticed Silas still had his eyes closed.
His profile was striking. The faint flush from the alcohol lingered on the tips of his ears, and the warm, amber glow from the dashboard highlighted his sharp jawline.
His usually tight lips were slightly parted, and his long lashes cast a small, fan-shaped shadow over his cheeks.
His breathing was steady and shallow, softening the intense aura he usually carried. Much like the quiet mountain enveloped in the night, it made her instinctively hold her breath.
Alaina couldn't help but mutter softly, "You've got some nerve, sleeping while I drive."
"When you took that corner..." Silas suddenly spoke up, "you hit the brakes too hard."
With that, he slowly opened his eyes and looked at her.
Alaina's face grew hot. He hadn't been asleep at all.
"What are we doing here?" she asked, changing the subject.
"Get out," Silas said, unbuckling his seatbelt.
Alaina glanced out at the pitch-black, deserted surroundings and hesitated.
Silas reached over and unbuckled her. "It's not like I'm going to sell you," he teased.
As he spoke, he stepped out of the car, walking around to open her door himself.
Alaina stepped out, and the headlights flicked off.
The biting mountain wind made her pull her winter coat tighter around herself.
Suddenly, a scarf was wrapped snugly around her neck.
Silas had taken off his own scarf and draped it around her, leaving no room for refusal.
She froze. The crisp, clean scent of pine, mixed with a faint trace of alcohol, filled her senses—a scent that was unfamiliar yet strangely comforting.
She reached up and gripped the scarf. The warmth seeped into her skin, flowing through her veins straight to her heart. Suppressing the strange flutter in her chest, she asked, "Why come out here just to catch a cold?"
