...
The last words Aunt Rosemary spoke tore at her even more.
The gray-haired woman had gripped her hands tightly, pleading in a low whisper, "Help me. Help the Summers family. I've tried everything, and Silas refuses to budge. His marrying you wasn't an accident. I know you're our last hope."
Hearing that, a tidal wave of guilt crashed over Alaina. She had to tell the truth. "I'm sorry, Aunt Rosemary. My marriage to Silas is just a partnership. It's strictly to complete Project Aegis."
But Aunt Rosemary looked entirely unfazed. "I knew it. He's always been this stubborn. Once he makes up his mind, no one can change it."
Then, with tear-filled eyes, the older woman leaned forward and collapsed to the floor right in front of her.
"Aunt Rosemary!" Alaina's eyes widened in horror as she scrambled down to help her.
Aunt Rosemary stared at her unblinking. "I swear to everything holy, if you agree to help me, I will spend my next life serving you like a beast of burden."
Alaina pulled at her with all her strength, but couldn't get her up, her face tight with distress.
"I can see it. Silas isn't completely indifferent to you," Aunt Rosemary pleaded desperately. "I am begging you to pull him out of his cold, isolated world. Make him fall in love with you. Make him want to leave a child for you, and for this family."
Alaina instinctively shook her head. Her and Silas... how could that ever happen?
"A person only wants to live when they have something to look forward to," Aunt Rosemary sobbed, her voice trembling violently. "That goes for Silas, for you, and for this entire family."
"A child brings continuity. It brings hope. The family's legacy can be preserved, and we can keep funding the genetic research. We might still have a chance to save him."
"I am begging you from the bottom of my heart."
Alaina froze in place, feeling like a massive boulder was crushing her chest, suffocating her.
She bit her lip, swallowing the painful lump in her throat. Gripping Aunt Rosemary's arms, her voice trembled, yet remained incredibly resolute. "Aunt Rosemary, please get up first. Give me some time to think."
After settling Aunt Rosemary back into her chair, Alaina walked out without looking back, her palms slick with cold sweat.
