She had already guessed Silas was the one who built the snowman. In fact, she had secretly hoped it was him.
They hadn't been living together for long, but seeing him every morning...
It felt like catching a few rays of sunlight on a snowy day like today.
She didn't want the man standing in front of her to die. It had nothing to do with romantic feelings; she simply, purely didn't want him gone.
Just as she didn't want to die herself, she wanted to see him living and breathing in this world long after their partnership ended.
...
"Come inside," Silas ordered softly, seeing her stand still.
Drawing courage from nowhere, she turned and asked, "About what you said last night, giving me a personal reward. Is that still on the table?"
Silas gave her a dark, piercing look, then nodded.
"Actually, I have a bucket list," she said.
Silas remained silent.
"I just realized I need to add one more thing to it," Alaina continued.
When Silas didn't respond, she pressed on, her bright eyes filled with a teasing smile. "To have the most perfect romance in the world."
Silas's grip on his coffee mug paused imperceptibly. The steam rising from the rim blurred the stormy emotions swirling in his eyes.
Alaina took a few steps toward him. "We agreed not to interfere in each other's lives. If I start dating someone now, you won't have a problem with it, right?"
Silas was quiet for two seconds. His throat bobbed slightly, his voice carrying a barely detectable rasp. "No."
Her eyes curved into bright crescents. "Then I want you to be my wingman. My advisor. I don't want to waste my precious time on losers. I want you to vet their backgrounds and their character, as my personal reward."
Silas didn't say a word, simply turning to head back inside.
She trailed after him. "Since you didn't say no, I'll take that as a yes."
