After the family expressed their gratitude, Alaina and Silas took a seat nearby.
A moment later, Ethan's sister, Fiona, walked over with an expressionless face. "Mrs. Summers, could you please come with me? I have some things I'd like to discuss with you privately."
Alaina nodded, shot Silas a reassuring look, and got up to follow Fiona into the private parlor.
During the three years she spent with the Harrington family, she hadn't interacted much with Fiona, but the older woman had always treated her with basic respect and courtesy.
Back when Fiona was determined to divorce her ex-husband, no one in the Harrington family supported her decision to end the political marriage. Alaina was the only one who comforted her, telling her that her life belonged to her alone.
Yet now, faced with her again, Fiona coldly demanded, "You indirectly killed my mother. Do you admit it?"
Confronted by this sudden accusation, Alaina stood frozen.
"My mother had a heart condition. You knew she couldn't handle the stress!" Fiona glared at her furiously. "It's because of your divorce with Ethan. She was constantly crying in secret, and her heart just couldn't take it anymore. That's what dragged her into this state."
"I know you have a massive backer like Silas Summers now, and no one dares to touch you. But look deep down into your conscience—do you really think you did right by my mother after everything she did for you?"
Alaina's hands slowly clenched into fists at her sides, her chest feeling tight as if a giant hand were crushing her heart. The pain was suffocating.
She knew Fiona was lashing out in the throes of grief, so she didn't argue back. She just stood there quietly and listened.
"Fiona, what the hell are you talking about?"
Suddenly, Ethan appeared in the doorway and stormed into the room.
Alaina looked at Ethan. His eyes were bloodshot, his face covered in rough stubble, entirely consumed by grief.
He stepped in front of Alaina, shielding her, and spoke in a dark, heavy tone to his sister. "Fiona, Alaina didn't do anything wrong. Stop taking your anger out on her. It was me. I'm the one who disappointed Mom. I'm the one who broke her heart. If you have to blame someone for this, blame me."
