The anxiety gripping Alaina's heart instantly vanished. She picked up a piece of popcorn and popped it into her mouth. The sweet, buttery aroma mixed with the natural sweetness of the corn melted across her tongue, entirely washing away the lingering knot of disappointment in her chest.
Her eyes curved into crescents as she nodded. "The sweetness is perfect."
Watching her features relax, Silas naturally took her empty hand, gave it a reassuring squeeze, and walked with her toward the ticket checkpoint.
Even after their tickets were scanned and the theater lights dimmed, Silas kept her hand firmly encased in his warm palm.
Alaina subconsciously leaned closer to him. Surrounded by his familiar scent, her heart felt incredibly safe and grounded as she quietly enjoyed the rest of the film.
When the movie ended, the crowd was dense. Silas kept her securely by his side, never loosening his grip on her hand as they navigated slowly toward the exit.
Several young women nearby covered their mouths and squealed, whispering about how insanely gorgeous he was in real life.
One particularly bold girl stepped right into their path. "Hi there, sorry to bother you! You're just so incredibly handsome, we were wondering if we could take a picture with you?"
Silas instinctively pulled Alaina slightly behind him. With a faint, aloof distance settling over his features, he flatly rejected the request. "That's not convenient."
Without leaving any room for further questions, he gripped Alaina's hand and continued toward the exit.
Once they were back in the car, Alaina spoke up. "Sorry, I didn't think this through. I caused you trouble."
Silas turned to look at her, his tone perfectly serious. "It's fine. The most important part of watching a movie is the atmosphere."
Hearing that, Alaina couldn't help but laugh out loud, her eyes crinkling happily. The last remnants of her worry completely dissolved.
Not long after they hit the road, Zachary lowered the privacy partition and addressed Silas. "Boss, we just got some breaking news."
As he spoke, he threw a deliberate glance at Alaina.
Alaina listened as Zachary announced that Mrs. Harrington had just passed away from a sudden heart attack.
She froze, completely blindsided by the news.
