Once inside her room, Alaina pressed her back against the door, finally daring to pull oxygen into her lungs.
"What are you panicking for?" she muttered to herself. "It's just a kiss. You're almost thirty years old. Pull yourself together!"
Groaning in frustration, she flopped onto her bed and buried her face in her arms. The more she thought about it, the more humiliating—and ridiculous—her reaction seemed.
Suddenly, a direct message chimed. It was a video from Michelle.
She clicked play, only to find a relationship influencer enthusiastically breaking down so-called kissing techniques.
Her eyes went wide in horror, and she furiously scrambled to exit the app.
Staring at the barrage of blown-kiss emojis Michelle bombarded her with right after, Alaina didn't know whether to laugh or cry.
She was a divorced woman who had never even been kissed. If she told anyone, they'd think she was lying.
After agonizing over it, she tentatively tapped the video again, listening with absolute, scholarly focus.
Without warning, the doorknob turned, and Silas brazenly pushed his way into her room.
Alaina nearly jumped out of her skin. Her thumbs swiped frantically across the screen, but her sheer panic made it impossible to locate the exit button.
The influencer's obnoxiously loud voice blared from the speakers: "Ladies, just kiss your crush exactly like I showed you, and I guarantee he'll lose his mind in seconds..."
Finally killing the app, she shoved the phone under her body, yelling defensively, "Ever heard of knocking?"
Silas stared deadpan at her scarlet face. "When have you ever knocked on my door?"
"Yes I have!" she fired back. "I started knocking eventually!"
"I'll keep that in mind for next time," he said coolly, turning around to leave.
Just as he stepped over the threshold, he pivoted on his heel, closing the distance between them in three long strides. Bending at the waist, he leaned in with a dangerous, teasing glint in his eye.
"What are you doing?" she gasped, her eyes flying open.
