Alaina gently traced the back of his neck with her fingertips. She didn't say another word, simply listening to the strong, rapid thumping of his heartbeat against his chest until a deep sense of peace washed over her.
As they emerged from the woods and approached their vehicle, Ethan's car suddenly came speeding toward them.
The brakes screeched, and Ethan practically tumbled out of the driver's seat.
Seeing Alaina safely perched on Silas's back, Ethan froze dead in his tracks. His lips parted several times before he finally managed to force a raspy whisper out of his throat. "Alaina..."
Alaina looked up at him, then noticed Logan stepping out from the other side.
Logan let out a massive sigh of relief and jogged over.
Silas cast a freezing, dismissive glare at Ethan, the air around him dropping to absolute zero.
"Are you okay, Alaina?" Logan asked frantically.
She shook her head. "Just a sprained ankle."
"Thank God. Thank God," Logan muttered, pressing his hands together in a quick prayer to the heavens.
Ethan slowly stepped forward, his eyes terrifyingly bloodshot.
He clenched his fists so tightly his knuckles turned white. All the desperate words he wanted to say piled up and suffocated in his throat, leaving behind nothing but an agonizing, hollow ache. Unable to look at her anymore, he turned to the side, his shoulders trembling uncontrollably.
Silas didn't say a word to him. Carrying Alaina, he intentionally brushed past Ethan's shoulder and walked straight to his own car. He gently lowered her into the passenger seat and buckled her in before leaning in to meet her gaze. His knuckles lightly brushed against her cheek. "Let's get you home and treat that ankle first."
Alaina nodded.
Logan stepped up to her window. "Since you're in good hands, I won't tag along."
Alaina signaled with her eyes for him to keep a close watch on Ethan.
"Don't worry, I know," Logan nodded, silently assuring her he'd handle it.
