They were impossibly close.
His nose almost brushed her temple, his warm breath fanning across her cheek and ear, sending a relentless, tickling heat through her.
Alaina's eyelashes fluttered wildly. She clamped her eyes shut, pretending to be fast asleep, but her tense posture and erratic breathing easily betrayed her.
"You're awake, aren't you?"
He lowered his voice, his breath sweeping over her flushed ear. The lazy, magnetic drawl at the end of his words sent a delicious shiver straight to her heart.
Unable to keep up the act, Alaina cracked her eyes open a fraction, her voice soft and trembling. "N-no."
"If you're uncomfortable... I can go back to my room to sleep," Silas offered.
"No." Alaina shook her head. "Wait until your heater is fixed before you go back. I... I was just... just worried my snoring might wake you."
"You don't snore," Silas said with absolute certainty.
"How do you know?"
"It's not our first time sharing a bed," he replied. "I would know if you snored."
Alaina froze. Staring into his deep, dark eyes that were mere inches away, she suddenly pictured him watching her sleep on all those previous nights.
As if by silent agreement, they both shifted slightly, lying on their sides to face each other.
Silas raised his hand, his fingertips landing lightly, agonizingly slowly against her temple.
The pad of his thumb gently traced her soft, warm cheek. His touch was feather-light, carrying a careful, agonizing restraint.
Inch by inch, he tucked the loose strands of hair behind her ear, his fingers lingering to gently rub her burning earlobe.
The subtle contact sent a jolt of electricity racing through her veins.
Alaina gave a violent shiver and instinctively shrank closer to his chest, closing the distance between them.
