"Didn't you enjoy watching?" Silas chuckled softly, his breath brushing against her temple. "I'm offering you the real thing. Isn't this better than staring at a screen?"
Alaina buried her face behind the edge of her laptop, her voice muffled like a buzzing mosquito. "I didn't enjoy it... I clicked it by accident..."
"I can't tell if it was an accident," Silas replied. "But you were definitely watching it with great interest."
"Who was watching with great interest?!" Alaina's head snapped up, colliding straight with his teasing gaze.
"Avoiding me on purpose, waiting until I fell asleep just so you could sneakily watch those videos... and you say you weren't engrossed?" Silas challenged.
"I didn't wait for you to fall asleep just to secretly watch those things, okay?" Alaina blurted out.
She instantly regretted it.
Predictably, Silas seized on her slip-up. "So you admit you were deliberately waiting for me to fall asleep?"
Alaina bit her lip, forcing a stiff smile of pure surrender.
Silas shifted his weight back, reached out, and forcefully pried the laptop from her grasp, setting it on the desk. He then took both her hands, pulled her up from the chair, and hauled her straight onto the bed.
After tucking her under the covers, he laid down on the other side.
Alaina lay stiff as a board, gripping the edge of the blanket tightly. She turned her head and saw Silas had closed his eyes.
Just as she was trying to calm her racing heart, the man beside her suddenly lifted his hand, tapped her lightly on the forehead twice, and muttered, "Stop overthinking and go to sleep."
Alaina frowned, rubbing the spot on her forehead, finding the situation absurdly funny.
She studied Silas's profile again. The light from the nightstand washed over him, softening the sharp, defined line of his jaw and casting a faint shadow under his long, thick eyelashes.
In the next moment, the tension that had gripped her chest all evening inexplicably eased. The chaotic heat and panic slowly faded away, replaced by a soft, comforting warmth that spread through her.
She thought he had fallen asleep, until she heard his low murmur. "If you don't go to sleep soon, I can't guarantee what will happen next."
