Alaina could feel the temperature in the car plummet dramatically.
She turned to look at him, then back at the woman.
Dressed in plain, simple clothes, the woman clearly showed her age. Silver threads wove through her hair at the temples, yet she still possessed a breathtaking, timeless beauty.
Without thinking, Alaina reached out and gently rested her hand over his white-knuckled grip.
Feeling her touch, Silas's fingers twitched. He turned his head to glance at her, the frigid glare in his eyes thawing just a fraction.
"Have Morris take you to work first. I'll explain everything to you later."
Alaina nodded, watching as Silas stepped out of the car and walked straight toward the woman.
The look in the woman's eyes as she watched Silas approach was so complex it was entirely unreadable to anyone else.
Alaina kept busy at the office until the afternoon.
It wasn't until nearly quitting time that Silas finally appeared.
He came to pick her up, suggesting they grab dinner out together.
Alaina happily agreed, making sure not to pry about the woman even after they finished eating.
Noticing a park right next to the restaurant, she suggested they take a walk to digest their meal.
Silas nodded, taking her hand and tucking it securely into his coat pocket.
He laced his fingers through hers, the warmth of his palm seeping into her skin and making her heart soften.
The cold wind swept dead leaves across the path. They crunched over the foliage for half a lap before Silas finally broke the silence. His voice was heavy, steeped in old, buried memories. "The woman at the gate this morning... is my mother."
Silas's mother? Hadn't she passed away years ago?
Alaina paused her steps and turned to look at him. She didn't interrupt, quietly waiting for him to continue.
