Kieran giggled hysterically, twisting around to wave at his father. "Daddy! Look!"
Lucas laughed and walked over, crouching down on the other side of his son.
Alaina looked up, perfectly catching Silas's intense gaze.
The sunlight filtered through the glass dome above, cascading over her hair and shoulders, illuminating the brilliant, carefree spark in her eyes.
Silas stood entirely speechless. This soft, fiercely maternal version of Alaina felt like a breathtaking new discovery.
Alaina offered a soft smile, then looked back down to help Kieran tweak the robot's action parameters. Her fingers danced across the control panel with her usual scientific precision, yet every movement was drenched in an unfamiliar gentleness.
A moment later, a staff member approached to inform them it was time to move to the next exhibit.
Kieran immediately grabbed Alaina's hand.
Alaina leaned down and hoisted him onto her hip. "Let's go. We can keep playing on the way."
For the rest of the tour, Kieran stuck to Alaina like glue.
Silas watched as Alaina carried the boy, talking and joking with him with inexhaustible patience.
Lucas walked beside Silas, a fond smile on his face. "He normally can't sit still for five minutes when I'm lecturing him at home. He's been an angel today."
Silas didn't reply. His eyes never once left Alaina.
When she looked down, her thick lashes cast long, delicate shadows in the sunlight. When she spoke, her lips curved effortlessly, radiating an ethereal softness.
He realized then that she wasn't just sharp edges and brilliant intellect; she harbored a heartbreakingly soft core.
The tour finally ended.
Back at the Summers Estate.
After showering, Alaina collapsed onto the bed in sheer exhaustion.
Silas knocked and walked in, carrying a cup of hot chamomile tea.
