"Whose funeral are you attending? Who died?"
Arthur's voice suddenly rang out from behind her, startling Alaina so badly she nearly lost her footing.
"Nobody," she quickly covered up. "I was talking about the TV show I'm watching."
"Stop spouting nonsense and get down here. I made some sweet dumplings," Arthur urged.
She nodded.
While eating the dumplings, Arthur mentioned that the upcoming spring memorial season meant things were about to get lively.
Alaina hadn't been home for so many years that she had completely forgotten about this tradition.
Every year around this time, the neighboring towns would collaborate to host vibrant cultural festivals.
There would be theatrical performances and acrobatics, rotating continuously through the various communities.
Vendors would also flock to the area, spontaneously forming a bustling marketplace.
She remembered the elders telling her when she was young that the spring rains always made people miss their departed loved ones.
Creating a festive atmosphere helped soothe the grief, showing the departed that the living were still embracing life.
After finishing her bowl, she returned to her room to find a text from Michelle.
[Lead Rossi, I'm so bored. When does this long vacation end?]
Alaina laughed and replied: [You count down the minutes to clock out when you're working, but the second you're on vacation, you're begging to go back.]
Michelle: [Guilty as charged.]
[I noticed Mr. Summers's schedule is packed every day. Haven't you two gone out on a romantic date?]
Alaina's heart clenched. [No.]
[Then what are you doing every day?]
[Hanging out at my hometown with my parents.]
Michelle's eyes lit up. [Can I come visit you?!]
Alaina: [You're welcome anytime.]
Michelle arrived the very next afternoon.
Having grown up in the city, Michelle was immediately ecstatic to be out in the countryside.
