Silas gave a curt hum of acknowledgement, his icy demeanor brushing past her shoulder.
Alaina involuntarily stopped in her tracks, watching his rigid back retreat as an inexplicable wave of melancholy washed over her.
Noticing she hadn't followed, Silas stopped as well. He didn't turn around, simply standing on the steps as his deep voice drifted back. "Have the driver take you."
"No, thank you." A sudden lump formed in her throat. She quickly masked her emotions and said softly, "I want to take the bus."
Silas fell silent for a moment before finally turning sideways, his gaze landing on her face, his expression incredibly hard to read.
The fading sunset traced his striking silhouette. The icy daggers from the night before had vanished from his eyes, replaced by a subtle, almost imperceptible exhaustion and hesitation.
In the end, without saying another word, he turned and walked inside.
Alaina followed through with her plan and returned to Rossi County.
Arthur and Evelyn excitedly prepared a massive feast to welcome her home.
Being back home truly made Alaina happy.
However, she found her longing for Silas flooding her mind, far exceeding anything she had anticipated.
She wanted to text him, typing out a string of meaningless words before deleting them all.
What point was there in texting first? Wasn't that just groveling for his attention?
Besides, she hadn't done anything wrong.
She found herself mindlessly scrolling through The Security Administration's internal message boards.
No matter where she went, she clung to her phone, terrified of missing an update.
When Stella grabbed her phone to play a game, Alaina hovered anxiously the second it rang, terrified the little girl might accidentally hang up on him.
Arthur and Evelyn observed her for a few days, whispering amongst themselves. "Something isn't right. Do you think Alaina had a fight with Silas?"
Evelyn nodded in agreement. "Most likely." She nudged Arthur with her elbow. "Why don't you give Silas a call and ask him?"
Prompted by his wife, Arthur quickly texted Silas, inviting him to come stay for a few days if he wasn't too busy.
