Alaina, not knowing whether to laugh or cry, just nodded.
Once Arthur and Evelyn had walked away, she whispered to Michelle, "Didn't you think today was a little weird? I have this strong feeling that Silas is nearby."
Michelle looked at her blankly before throwing an arm over her shoulder. "Lead Rossi, you really, really miss Mr. Summers."
At that moment, Stella wandered over. "Michelle, can you help me with my homework? My sister is too mean."
Alaina laughed. "You think swapping tutors is magically going to make you do your homework?"
Stella let out a dramatic, grown-up sigh. "You just don't get it. A straight-A student could never understand the struggles of a slacker."
Michelle giggled and agreed to follow her to the table.
Alaina shook her head in helpless amusement.
After dinner.
Michelle sat at the desk, patiently trying to tutor Stella.
Alaina stood nearby, watching the two of them with the amused look of someone waiting for a comedy show to start.
Stella had an incredibly sweet and innocent face. With her round cheeks and bright, clear eyes, she looked so soft and obedient that anyone would praise her for being a well-behaved little girl.
But the moment a textbook opened, her true slacker nature was fully exposed—she was genuinely sweet, but she genuinely had no clue what she was doing.
She sat perfectly straight, her back rigid, looking incredibly focused on the surface. In reality, she was completely zoning out in a state of "pseudo-concentration."
Her hands never stopped fidgeting with her pencil. One second she was twirling it, the next she was aimlessly poking her eraser, and then she'd start picking at the curled edge of her notebook. She did everything except actually write down an answer.
Her bright eyes were entirely unfocused, staring blankly at the math problems as her mind drifted miles away.
Michelle sat beside her, the majority of her patience depleted, wearing a look of absolute, soul-crushing defeat.
