Alaina's pent-up emotions finally gave way, and the tears she had been holding back slipped quietly down her cheeks, soaking into the fabric of his coat at his shoulder.
She didn't struggle or throw a fit. Instead, she simply stood on her tiptoes, wrapping her arms tightly around his waist, pouring all her displaced longing, hurt, and worry into this long-overdue embrace.
His hold was as familiar and grounding as ever, chasing away all the coldness and anxiety that had plagued her.
The relentless unease of the past few days was completely smoothed over in an instant.
"Silas." Alaina kept her face buried against his chest, her voice soft but incredibly firm, every word carrying weight. "No more fighting. No more giving each other the silent treatment."
A sharp lump formed in Silas's throat. His arms tightened around her, as if trying to press her right into his very soul.
For the first time in all his years, he dared to acknowledge his true feelings, letting go of his pride to lean on the woman in his arms.
He gently rested his cheek against the top of her head, his voice low and raspy, full of solemn surrender and a promise for the rest of their lives. "Okay."
Under the dim glow of the streetlamp, they held each other close, their shadows merging into one.
After an immeasurable amount of time, Alaina eased back slightly and looked at him. "Let's go. Let's go home."
Silas nodded.
They strolled under the moonlight, hand in hand, making their way back to the Rossi home.
Alaina bit her lip, but ultimately couldn't hold back. "Just to prevent something like this from happening again, we need to get a few things straight right now."
Silas paused, giving her a nod of agreement.
"My intention was never to micromanage your life, and I won't bring up what I said before," Alaina started. "But I stand by my beliefs. I believe in science, and I believe in medicine."
