Alaina simply couldn't handle being surrounded by so many people aggressively planning a wedding she hadn't officially agreed to yet, looking far more excited than she was.
She made up an excuse, grabbed Silas, and dragged him back to The Summers Estate.
As they were nearing the estate, Silas received a call. General Henderson wanted him to bring his wife over for dinner.
Seeing Alaina shoot him a subtle glance indicating she was exhausted, he covered for her, claiming she had gone back to her hometown.
After dropping Alaina off at the estate, he headed to the dinner alone.
Hearing the news of her return, Valerie hurried over to the villa to see her. "Dr. Everett from that research institute just reached out to me," she said, practically vibrating with excitement. "He mentioned he's going to be in town for a few days on an academic exchange. I want to talk to Silas and ask him to meet with Dr. Everett. Do you think that's a good idea?"
Alaina looked incredibly awkward, but seeing the pure hope shining in Valerie's eyes, she didn't have the heart to shoot her down.
"We can't rush this," she said gently, offering a compromise. "How about I go meet this Dr. Everett first? I'm on vacation anyway, so my schedule is pretty flexible."
Valerie froze for a few seconds before nodding enthusiastically. "I'll follow your lead."
She handed over Dr. Everett's business card and promptly turned to leave.
Alone in her room, Alaina stared down at the card, feeling thoroughly conflicted.
Just then, Mrs. Gable knocked on the door. "Ma'am, Aunt Rosemary has returned and is asking to see you."
Alaina hurried over immediately.
The moment Aunt Rosemary saw her, she pulled her into a joyful hug. "This is wonderful! Absolutely wonderful!"
Alaina was completely bewildered.
Then Aunt Rosemary beamed and said, "Deciding to have a formal wedding is the best decision you two could have ever made."
Alaina didn't even need to ask; Silas had obviously tipped her off.
Aunt Rosemary gripped her hands tightly. "I was just so thrilled, I had to come see you the moment I got back."
