"But don't get mad," she quickly added, wanting to clarify. "I'm not telling you this because I want to try and convince you again. She genuinely means well. Last time, she kept praying for you even when she was terribly sick. I was deeply moved by her devotion. Just to ease her anxiety, I want to go meet this Dr. Everett myself. It'll just be a quick meeting, and I'll be right back once I've gone through the motions."
After laying it all out, she waited patiently for his verdict.
"You're being so upfront about this. Aren't you worried I'll say no?" Silas asked.
"You have every right to say no," Alaina replied. "I told you, I respect your boundaries. That's exactly why I didn't want to go behind your back."
Silas took her hands in his, feeling the warmth of her palms. His eyes were overflowing with affection.
"Go ahead," he nodded. "I'll have Morris drive you."
Alaina nodded.
Before heading out, she contacted Dr. Everett to set things up.
He mentioned he was staying at a garden resort on the outskirts of the city and forwarded her the address.
The next day, Alaina accompanied Valerie to the hotel, where they finally met the man in question.
Dr. Everett appeared to be in his late forties, carrying himself with a refined, gentlemanly air.
Upon seeing him, Valerie's eyes filled with blatant reverence. She turned to Alaina and whispered, "Dr. Everett's mentor was the lead physician for my late husband."
Dr. Everett smiled gracefully. "Indeed. I had just graduated back then. I never imagined I'd have the honor of crossing paths with you again."
Valerie offered a warm smile in return, then looked back at Alaina. "You really need to listen carefully to what Dr. Everett has to say."
Alaina maintained a polite smile.
"Mrs. Summers," Dr. Everett began, addressing Alaina directly, "our institute partners closely with leading hospitals and research facilities all over the globe. We have always been at the absolute forefront of genetic diseases and hereditary defects. Just last month, my latest research paper was published globally. If you're interested, I'd be happy to share it with you."
