Hearing this, Ethan nodded in agreement.
Back at the villa.
Ethan gently lifted Alaina out of the car and carried her all the way to their bedroom.
Propped up against the pillows, Alaina quickly texted Logan, explaining the situation and promising to sneak back to the Foster residence as soon as she could shake Ethan.
From the moment they arrived, Ethan didn't stop moving.
He personally wiped her face and hands with a warm towel, held a glass of water to her lips, and carefully spoon-fed her soup.
He was mimicking the exact way she used to take care of him, doting on her with absolute precision.
Alaina watched him, but her heart remained completely numb. This wasn't romantic; it was pure torture.
Later that evening.
Ethan drew a warm bath and padded the edge of the tub with thick towels before carrying her over to soak her feet.
The water was scalding. Alaina winced, gasping, "It's too hot."
Ethan scrambled to turn on the cold tap. As the water shifted, his eyes locked onto a jagged scar across the top of her foot.
He remembered exactly how it happened. Years ago, in a fit of rage, he had hurled a ceramic bowl across the room, and the shattered pieces had sliced right into her flesh.
He dropped to one knee beside the tub, plunging his hand into the water to trace the raised, ugly skin. "Does it still hurt?"
Alaina's face remained entirely blank, immune to his sudden display of guilt. She deliberately pulled her foot away.
Ethan's fingers trembled. A violent shade of red flooded his eyes as he fought to keep his voice steady. "Why didn't you tell me you were in the hospital? I know you're mad at me, but this is crossing a line."
"If Lily hadn't told me she saw you there, I wouldn't have even known..."
"You have such a ridiculous temper. You intentionally scheduled the surgery on your birthday just to spite me..."
