After speaking, Lily shot Harvey a meaningful look.
Harvey immediately caught on. "Isn't it obvious? She had a guilty conscience. She was terrified her crimes would eventually come to light, so she secured a lifeline in advance. She knew that to protect its own reputation, the Harrington family would throw everything they had into bailing her out. You have to admit, she's incredibly smart. A brilliant schemer."
Ethan's expression darkened by the second. He simply instructed Harvey to keep monitoring the situation.
Once Harvey stepped out of the car, Ethan ordered the driver to take Lily home first.
Returning to his expansive estate, Ethan slumped onto the living room sofa, utterly exhausted. He closed his eyes, desperate for a moment of peace.
A short while later, a maid brought out a late-night meal. "Sir, you look drained. Please have something to eat and get some rest."
Ethan swallowed dryly. He noticed that the tray not only held his favorite bowl of savory dumplings, but also his daily medications, finally sorted into their proper compartments.
Without overthinking it, he picked up a spoon and tasted the broth.
To his surprise, the flavor was an almost perfect replica of Alaina's cooking.
"How is it, sir? Have I improved?" the maid asked tentatively.
He nodded.
The maid eagerly explained.
She told him that a few days before the madam left, she had meticulously written out instructions for his daily vitamins and pills.
Hearing that his appetite had grown finicky, she had even pushed through her own illness to personally teach the kitchen staff how to fold these specific dumplings.
"Sir, the madam truly is wonderful," the maid said, her voice full of admiration and regret. "Over the past few years, we've all seen just how deeply she cares for you. Couples fight, but they always make up. Please, bring the madam back home soon."
As the maid walked away, Ethan's mind was consumed by thoughts of Alaina. His gaze sharpened with renewed resolve as he texted Lily.
Lily, I want to meet Julian in person.
Lily: Are you completely out of your mind? Why don't you just say you want to see Silas directly?
Ethan: Knowing her the way I do, I am certain she is innocent.
Lily: It's only been three years. How well could you possibly know her? Don't tell me you've actually fallen for her?
