The CEO’s Regret My Ex-Wife is a Tech Goddess novel Chapter 49

"What... what are you doing here?" Ethan stammered, completely thrown off balance.

Alaina flashed a tight smile. "Why wouldn't I be here?"

"This is the research institute's most exclusive gala," Ethan said, his tone dripping with its usual arrogant condescension. "Did my mother give you an invitation? Are you here to spy on me?"

Hearing that, Alaina simply stared back with total indifference, choosing not to dignify him with an answer.

A split second later, a staff member scurried over and addressed her respectfully. "Dr. Rossi, Professor Foster sent me to find you. He would like you to join him immediately."

Dr. Rossi...

Ethan's pupils blew wide. He stared at her, entirely incapable of processing the words he had just heard.

Alaina nodded at the staff member. "I'll be right there, thank you."

She turned her icy gaze back to Ethan. "I have matters to attend to. Excuse me."

Ethan instinctively shot out an arm to block her. "What is your relationship... with Professor Foster?"

Right on cue, Franklin walked over with a commanding presence and answered for her. "She is my top protégé, Alaina Rossi. Didn't you say you wanted to meet her the last time we spoke, Mr. Harrington?"

"Professor," Alaina greeted, moving gracefully to his side.

Wearing an impeccably tailored formal suit, Franklin beamed with paternal pride, gently taking her hand and placing it on his arm.

Dropping all pretense, he shot Ethan a look of profound disgust before turning back to Alaina. "Let's go. Dean Sterling and I have been talking about you non-stop. Come chat with us."

Alaina nodded, tossing Ethan one final, chilling glance before letting Franklin lead her away.

Ethan was left glued to the floor. His supreme arrogance shattered like a cheap porcelain plate, flaking off his face piece by humiliating piece.

He stared at Alaina's retreating back. His mouth was open, his Adam's apple bobbing violently, but he couldn't force out a single syllable.

For three years, he had believed that the gentle, submissive woman taking care of him was a poorly educated country girl—someone utterly mundane, someone the world knew was beneath his elite status...

As it turned out, the only pathetic clown in the room was him.
