Ethan was clearly taken aback. He turned his face away, looking as if he wanted to say something but held back, muttering softly, "Why are you bringing this up?"
"You really don't believe it," she answered for him. "Because you've loved Lily Summers since you were a kid, and you've never been able to let her go."
Ethan's brow furrowed, and he turned back to look at her, a flash of astonishment in his eyes.
After his legs had healed, right before they officially got together, they had specifically discussed this very topic.
Alaina remembered his sincere reply back then. He had promised that with a little time, he would move on, and since he had made his choice, he wouldn't look back.
That choice was supposed to be spending the rest of his life with her, growing old together.
Thinking back on it now, she felt incredibly naive for ever believing those words.
Silence reclaimed the car, making the awkward tension excruciatingly obvious.
Alaina let out a soft sigh. "Ethan, whether you believe it or not, I really have moved on."
Upon hearing this, Ethan couldn't force out a single syllable. He stared out the window at the blurring scenery, unable to hide his intense frustration.
Catching sight of a familiar road sign, Ethan couldn't help but ask his driver, "Have we been here before?"
The driver paused before gently reminding him, "You probably don't remember, sir. During your freshman year of high school, you got lost around here..."
Hearing this, Ethan nodded. "That's right. I got lost and ran into some bad people. I almost didn't make it. Thank God Lily risked her own life and ran into the deep woods to save me."
Alaina watched his profile soften with profound nostalgia and gratitude, and a faint tremor rippled through her gaze.
Before long, the car pulled into Rossi County and parked right outside Alaina's childhood home.
Hearing the engine, Evelyn immediately hurried out. Seeing Alaina step out of the car, she cheered with sheer excitement, "Alaina is back! You're really back!"
Alaina smiled and walked over to hug her stepmother.
"This is wonderful! You're finally home. We missed you to death," Evelyn said with a beaming smile, her eyes then shifting to Ethan, who was stepping out right behind her.
