She took a half-step back as if she had seen a ghost, silently cursing the old adage about speaking of the devil.
Ethan Harrington took in her guilty expression, his anger boiling over as he demanded, "For over ten days, you haven't answered my calls or replied to my messages. Do you have any idea how worried I was?"
She frowned, feeling nothing but a profound sense of exhaustion as she looked at the man before her.
She didn't want to waste her breath. She turned to leave, but Ethan grabbed her wrist and forcefully pulled her back.
She shook off his grip, her tone freezing over. "Before our thirty days are up, I don't see any reason for us to be in contact."
Furious, Ethan snapped, "Alaina, I said I was worried about you. Are you completely deaf to that?"
Alaina let out a cold scoff. Whether his concern was genuine or faked, it no longer meant anything to her.
She spoke with blunt honesty, "In just a couple of weeks, we'll be officially done. You don't need to throw these pathetic crumbs of affection my way. I really don't need them."
"You're being entirely too dramatic about this," Ethan said, his eyes reddening with an intense look of grievance. "Hasn't a week and a half been enough time for you to throw your tantrum? I can't keep tiptoeing around your moods forever."
Alaina let out a soft, exasperated laugh. "If you don't have actual business to discuss, I'm leaving."
Only then did Ethan get to the point. "Regarding the land for the wellness center, your dad had his lawyer send a letter to our legal department. He's refusing the dividend agreement. He will only accept a full cash buyout."
Alaina froze, completely caught off guard.
When Arthur Rossi had originally offered that plot of land as part of her dowry, there had been a clear understanding with the Harrington family.
The land was never a permanent gift; it was only meant for the Harrington family's free use as long as the marriage lasted.
"No corporation has that kind of liquid cash lying around," Ethan stated grimly. "Until this land dispute is resolved, we cannot go through with this divorce."
Alaina steadied her breathing and replied, "I'll go back and figure out what's going on."
With that, she walked away.
