Because he knew exactly what it felt like to have your heart anchored to one person.
Alaina tapped onto the registration page and clicked [RSVP].
A moment later, Chloe sent a shocked emoji, followed by a text: [Are you sure you want to go? Aren't you afraid of running into the ghosts of your past?]
Alaina's heart felt completely at peace. She replied instantly: [I'm not afraid anymore.]
Now that Ethan Harrington was no longer her weakness, what was left to fear?
Thinking more clearly about it, she only had so much time left to live. What was there to be afraid of?
She pulled up Zachary Jenkins's profile and sent him a message: [Hello Zachary, I accept the position of project team leader, but I have a few additional conditions. Please relay them for me. One, the R&D team must remain entirely independent and not be subjected to Apex's management. Two, tasks can be assigned, but there must be zero interference with our specific R&D operations. Three, I have full authority over the team's personnel.]
The next day.
She woke up to a message from Zachary, asking her to come in and sign the contract.
Following the GPS coordinates to The Security Administration, she went through a rigorous security check before following Zachary into the main office building.
After signing the papers, Zachary guided her through the process of securing various access credentials.
He explained that the project team's research lab was located on the second underground level of the building.
She toured the lab and manufacturing floor. It was far more expansive and professional than her old university research facility. Seeing this setup alone made her feel completely validated in signing that deal with the devil.
Her office was on the third floor of the building. A stack of candidate files for her team was already waiting on her desk.
"Over at Apex, a specific area has been cordoned off for your team's exclusive use. You can utilize their facilities for anything that requires Apex's cooperation," Zachary said.
She nodded.
Zachary gestured toward the door. "If you don't have any other questions, Ms. Rossi, please come with me to meet Mr. Summers."
Alaina nodded, half a beat too slow. She spent the entire walk to the executive office silently hyping herself up.
From this moment forward, she was Silas Summers's subordinate. All she had to do was focus on her research.
