Ethan wasn't wearing his suit jacket, and the collar of his dress shirt was undone. He emerged from the shadows, walking straight toward her.
Noticing the exhaustion etched into his features, Alaina spoke up first. "You don't need to worry about the land. Once we go to the courthouse to finalize the paperwork, I'll..."
"Answer my question first," Ethan interrupted, completely dismissing her reassurance. "You became the leader of The Security Administration's special team. Is it true?"
She nodded.
Ethan let out a bitter scoff. "The position Lily practically bled for, fought tooth and nail to secure, miraculously lands in your lap overnight."
His gaze turned freezing cold. "Why?"
He didn't need to elaborate; that single look made it clear he had already convicted her.
A chilling night breeze swept through the courtyard, rustling the leaves like a mournful lullaby.
Alaina frowned, holding his hostile glare with icy indifference.
"Do you have any idea that Lily suffered a severe panic attack earlier because of you? She almost ended up in the hospital," Ethan growled, keeping his voice low. "You really know how to ruin a person, don't you? You go straight for the jugular."
As he spoke, his hands clamped down hard on her shoulders. He stared directly into her eyes, a mocking, bitter smile curling on his lips.
"I thought you were just throwing a tantrum."
"I didn't realize... you had this entirely plotted out."
"Now you've successfully crushed Lily. What about me? What's your grand plan? Do you think I've broken my promise, so now you're going to exact some brutal revenge?"
"Take back the land, destroy the wellness center, let the board crucify me, and make me a pariah in my own family?"
Alaina let out a cold laugh. She didn't even have the energy to argue. She tried to pull away, but his grip only tightened like a vise.
"Let go of me," she ordered, her voice like ice.
"Feeling guilty?" Ethan sneered, his tone dripping with contempt. "I'm not finished."
"You want to break me all over again. You want me on my knees begging for forgiveness. You want me to be completely reliant on you, just like before, so I have no choice but to crawl back to you and belong solely to you."
"Ever since I got back on my feet, you haven't been able to control me."
"You know perfectly well that if I wasn't a broken man, you would never be good enough for me. So you have to resort to this. You want to shatter my 'legs' all over again and turn me back into a cripple."
