"We heard from Lily that a gold digger like you actually managed to become Mrs. Harrington. Very impressive."
"Tsk, tsk. You were so quiet back in school. Who knew you had it in you to climb the social ladder and marry into wealth?"
...
The clique fired off their comments like a machine gun, their tones exaggerated and venomous.
Lily didn't need to say a single word. She just watched coldly as her friends continued to harass Alaina.
That was always her style—stepping in at the very end to play the fake peacemaker.
"Take your time catching up. I'm going to find Ethan," Lily said, shooting Alaina a triumphant glance before signaling the girls to keep going.
"What's wrong with being a social climber? She knows how to seize an opportunity. When Ethan was at his absolute lowest, she shamelessly threw herself at him. And then she got lucky when he recovered."
"But new money is still new money. You can't wash away that cheapness in your bones. Don't think for a second that a position you stole by taking advantage of someone's misery puts you on our level."
...
The suffocating feeling of being bullied rushed back to her.
Alaina looked calmly at the chattering group, straightening her slender back, her gaze so steady it bordered on numb.
She was no longer that meek little girl who swallowed her pride.
"You're being incredibly loud. Are you finished?" she asked coldly, her impatience showing.
The women exchanged glances, surprised she would speak to them that way, before bursting into disdainful laughter.
Then they started up again...
"Of course we're not finished. Ethan just needed a glorified nurse. Do you really think you're some grand, respected wife?"
"Exactly. You can't hide your tacky roots no matter how hard you try. You played the innocent wallflower in school, but you were calculating the whole time. Preying on someone when they were down—that's just ruthless."
...
Insult after insult rained down on Alaina like a relentless hailstorm, showing absolutely no mercy.
