Alaina snapped back to reality, turning her head toward the voice.
A ripple went through the crowd, and several female alumni instantly wore expressions of absolute adoration.
"It's Jasper."
"I can't believe he's here."
...
Jasper crossed the distance in a few long strides, gently taking the hose from her hands and whispering, "Calm down. Let it go."
"Jasper!" The drenched women clung to each other, sobbing as if their savior had arrived. "Help us! You saw it, Alaina attacked us. You have to get justice for us!"
Jasper tossed the hose aside and smiled pleasantly. "I certainly saw everything."
"The water pressure was unstable, and the hose whipped around, accidentally spraying you. Alaina tried to control it, but she just didn't have the arm strength."
He glanced at her. "Isn't that right, Alaina?"
It took her a second, but Alaina nodded.
"It's cold out. You should go to the locker rooms and dry off," Jasper told the shivering women, before gesturing for Alaina to follow him.
They walked down a quiet, tree-lined path. Alaina kept stealing glances at him, her mind swirling with confusion.
Back then, she had known exactly who Jasper was, but there was no way he would have known her.
"I always remembered you," Jasper suddenly said, offering a warm smile. "Before I went abroad, you were actually quite famous."
Alaina froze, letting out a self-deprecating laugh. "I guess I made quite a fool of myself."
Jasper chuckled. "If you had fought back against the bullies like you did just now, you would have been even more famous."
Alaina's cheeks flushed red. "..."
"I'm kidding," Jasper smiled gently. "I remembered you because you were top of our class that year and won gold in the math decathlon. I saw your methods for solving those equations. They were brilliant."
Alaina smiled softly.
"Also, you're good friends with a good friend of mine," Jasper added.
