"I'm very happy to be working side-by-side with you again, Owen," she said.
Owen waved his hands, overwhelmed. "I... I don't deserve that."
"Owen," Alaina said, addressing him seriously. "I didn't pick you; The Security Administration did. Anyone who made it into this special task force has the proven skills and dedication. Over the past few years, you've been highly recognized at Apex. Don't sell yourself short."
"But I..."
"Let the past stay in the past," Alaina said, patting his shoulder. "If you really feel like you owe me, then give this project everything you've got with me."
Owen nodded.
That afternoon, Alaina took her five team members to the Apex equipment plant, where they finally saw the lithography machine in person.
Standing in her cleanroom suit in front of the massive machine, she felt a surge of emotion.
She knew the special task force's mission perfectly well: without a more advanced lithography machine, the micro-military chips couldn't be mass-produced, even if they successfully developed them.
She and her team meticulously inspected the machine, then discussed the current issues with the Apex staff, working until late into the night before leaving the facility.
Michelle suggested they all grab a late dinner together as a sort of kickoff rally.
Alaina agreed, figuring she didn't want to head back to The Summers Estate too early anyway.
After dinner, the team members gradually trickled out.
Michelle, chatty by nature, had found out that Owen used to work closely with her boss in the past, so she kept pestering him for stories about Alaina's glory days in college.
Resting her chin in her hands, Michelle listened with rapt attention. "Owen, is the Technology Progress Award really that big of a deal in the semiconductor industry?"
Owen nodded. "As far as I know, the winners are usually corporate research teams. Our boss is the only one who ever won it as a student."
Michelle's eyes went wide with pure admiration. "Boss, you are incredible."
Alaina smiled. "That's all in the past. It was a mix of skill and a bit of luck."
