Lily froze, utterly confused.
"When I was at my lowest, I did hate you," Ethan told her earnestly.
"But once my pain was healed, I stopped hating you. Even if you hadn't lied, I would have forgiven you."
Hearing this, Lily's aggrieved expression slowly morphed into bitter resentment.
"Are you saying the only reason I was forgiven is because of Alaina? That Alaina is the one who healed you?"
Ethan lowered his eyes and said softly, "Coming here together... consider it fulfilling the promise I made to you back then. Once everything here is wrapped up, I won't be able to take care of you the way I used to when we get back."
"Lily, stop clinging to the past. We both need to look forward and move on. In my heart, there will always be a place for our history. We will always be the best of friends."
He looked at her with a gentle gaze.
Lily said nothing, her eyes filled with sheer stubbornness.
If her grandmother hadn't repeatedly warned her not to let anything slip, she would have loved to tell him that he and Alaina were over for good.
Without another word, she stomped back to her room in a huff.
Ethan let out a quiet sigh and checked the time on his phone.
It should be around noon back home.
He texted Ms. Campbell: [Has my wife asked for me?]
Ms. Campbell replied instantly: [No.]
[Mr. Harrington, would you like me to ask her to contact you?]
Ethan stared at the screen, tossing his phone aside as an indescribable frustration welled up inside him.
...
Noon.
At The Security Administration's staff cafeteria.
Alaina was sitting and eating with her team, still discussing the data they had just reviewed.
