“Rebecca, here... take this.” Jackson held out a check. “Think of it as a little gift from me , since you’ll finally be reunited with your birth parents.”

Rebecca Russell came down the stairs, lugging her light suitcase. When she saw the check for a hundred thousand dollars in Jackson’s hand, she barely glanced at it, a hint of a smirk flickering in her eyes.

A congratulatory gift? More like hush money.

She’d been adopted by the James family at six. For thirteen years, she’d been kept close for one reason: Shirley’s transfusions. Now that Shirley was finally healthy again, Rebecca’s ‘usefulness’ had run dry. Of course she was getting kicked out.

“No, thanks. I don’t need it,” Rebecca said quietly. She pushed the check aside and headed for the door without a glance back, her suitcase trailing along the carpet.

Her indifference stung Jackson more than he cared to admit.

Harriet, perched on the sofa, slammed her cup down and shot Jackson an angry look. “We raised her for over a decade. Never asked for a penny in return... and now you want to give her money? She can’t even bother to say goodbye. What an ungrateful child.”

“That’s enough,” Jackson said sharply.

Shirley, sitting next to Harriet, reached over with a comforting gesture. “Mom, Rebecca’s lived here all those years... she had it easy. But the Russells don’t have much. She’s probably just upset about going back there and having to adjust. That’s all.”

Honestly, the James family had made a big show of finding Rebecca’s biological parents before sending her away, just so nobody could say they abandoned her. According to what Shirley heard, the Russells lived out in Silvania, the poorest town around for miles. As if that wasn’t bad enough, everyone knew Madonna and Fabian Russell were broke, scraping by on whatever trash they could find. They even had three sons, all of them lazy and useless by reputation.

There was no way Rebecca wouldn’t suffer. Her life was basically over.
