The Coma Prince’s Fiancée novel Chapter 144

Shirley shot Rebecca a furious glare. “You’re still putting on a front? Seriously? Do you really think I’m that clueless? Nash and I saw you at Nocturne with our own eyes, getting into some old guy’s car!”

At first, Rebecca thought Shirley was just making things up. But when the words “old man” and “Nocturne” came up, memories of that night surfaced—her and Wade coming here to meet Susan and Elbert. No wonder Shirley spoke with such confidence. She had actually seen it happen.

The manager, who had been trying hard to avoid getting involved, finally couldn’t keep quiet. Shirley’s comments were out of line, and now she was pushing even further, acting as if she could decide Rebecca’s future marriage on behalf of Irvin and the chairman’s family.

“Ma’am, Nocturne is a fine-dining restaurant, not a dating market. If you’re here to eat, just tell me your room number and I’ll have someone take you. If not, then please leave now and stop disturbing our other guests.”

Shirley had already guessed there was something between the manager and Rebecca. Hearing him step in like that only made her more certain. She didn’t care how powerful Nocturne’s backers were, that was the owner’s concern. What did a manager have to do with anything?

A sneer curled at her lips. “Rebecca isn’t even saying a word. Why are you so worked up? Honestly, you’re just an employee here. Do you really think you matter that much? Not to brag, but Rebecca’s got higher standards than you realize. I saw her getting into this old guy’s black Maybach. You know, you could work your whole life and never afford something like that.”

With no outsiders to impress, she couldn’t even be bothered to pretend any longer. Her words got sharper, meaner. In her eyes, Rebecca was nothing more than some man’s plaything. What did it matter which man? Peter was from a big family—he could help Rebecca move up in the world and fix the order problem for the Jameses. Two birds, one stone.

Rebecca listened as Shirley went on and on about “the old man”—now with talk about a black Maybach. She couldn’t help but find it amusing.

At first, the manager didn’t get what Shirley was trying to say. When it hit him, he was so angry he almost lost it. “My relationship with Ms. Russell is nothing but professional. How could you make such nasty assumptions? For the record, I’m married. I love and respect my wife. If you keep up these accusations, I’ll have no choice but to call my lawyer and sue you for slander.”
