The Coma Prince’s Fiancée novel Chapter 3

Rebecca ignored their sour faces and kept turning the bracelet around her wrist, her voice calm and steady.

“You both know exactly why you adopted me,” she said. “Shirley got sick and needed regular blood transfusions to stay alive. The hospital couldn’t guarantee enough blood each month, but then you found out my blood type was a perfect match. So what did you do? You paid off the orphanage and took me home.”-

“Since I was six, I’ve been giving Shirley blood every month. If she’s still alive today, it’s because of me. So, really, you should be thanking me, not the other way around.”

“And for the record, I started winning scholarships when I was ten. I’ve always paid for my own tuition and living expenses. Even today, I’m leaving without taking anything from you.”

“When Nash Gates came to propose, I did my best to explain that I wasn’t the one who saved his life. You knew it was Shirley, but you couldn’t resist the Gates family’s power, even though you looked down on Nash for being a spoiled mess. You let him chase after me and even accepted his proposal for me. Whatever you gained from that engagement was worth way more than whatever you spent on me in all these years.”

“Now Nash is his grandfather’s only chosen heir, and suddenly you’re desperate to have Shirley marry him instead. I agreed to call off the engagement…”

She looked straight at them, her eyes clear. “So, emotionally and financially, I don’t owe you a single thing.”

The room went quiet. Faces turned pale. Even the house staff started whispering.

“I used to keep quiet for the sake of keeping the peace. But from now on, there’s nothing left between us. If I ever hear you calling me ungrateful or pretending like I’m some heartless traitor…”

She smiled, her tone light, but there was a sharp edge to her words. “I don’t think either of you wants people whispering that you kept me around as a walking blood bank—and traded my future for your own benefit.”

Harriet’s face was twisted with anger. She looked about ready to explode, but Jackson reached out and stopped her.

Jackson’s eyes were hard to read as he stared at Rebecca.

He’d always known she was smart. A kid doesn’t get into an elite school at fifteen and graduate at the very top by accident. Her achievements had once made Shirley feel so small that she’d fallen into depression, almost giving up on everything.

That’s when he’d started meddling. Slowly but surely, Rebecca became quiet and invisible, just like the family wanted. She faded into the background so Shirley could shine.

Jim nodded, keeping a straight face.

Harriet let out a cold laugh, but for once didn’t say anything mean.

Rebecca paused for a second, surprised, but she really had no energy to keep playing nice with this family. She grabbed her bag and headed for the door.

As her silhouette disappeared, Shirley finally felt the tension in her chest start to fade.

Now that Rebecca had left, they were truly from two separate worlds.

In Shirley’s mind, the line between them had finally been drawn—and it wasn’t in Rebecca’s favor.

From now on, Shirley thought, Rebecca would never be anything but an outsider looking up at her with envy.
