By the time Neely finally made it to the entrance, all hyped up to challenge the newcomer who had smashed his record, he realized she was already gone.
He picked up the latest gossip and hurried over, only to find a crowd blocking the exit of Apex Academy. In the middle of it all, he spotted his goddess. He stopped in his tracks, smoothed out his hair, fixed his clothes, and took a deep breath before walking over.
“Paulina, why are you all standing around here? Did something happen with the entrance?”
Paulina was still in shock, so his voice kind of snapped her out of it. She looked at Magee, who was frowning, then back at Neely, trying to muster a half-decent smile.
“The entrance is fine. Rebecca was just here. We were so stunned we just stood here and totally forgot to go inside ourselves.”
“Rebecca?” Neely noticed everyone acting weird and hesitated before he asked, “Are you talking about that Rebecca?”
Paulina nodded. “Yeah, that’s her.”
When Rebecca’s name came up, Magee’s usually charming face twisted, almost like he was annoyed. “But who knows which class she’ll end up in. Neely, she broke your record. I bet there’s a good chance she’s going to be in your class.”
Neely couldn’t hide how shocked he was. Sure, breaking his record was tough, but it shouldn’t be enough to get someone straight into Apex Academy.
He turned to Paulina. “Didn’t you recommend her? Don’t you know how she even got in?”
Under everyone’s stares, Paulina’s eyes flashed with frustration. She clenched her teeth, fighting to keep it together, and forced out a bitter laugh. “Honestly, I have no idea. I only sponsored her for a regular program. If I’d known, I wouldn’t have just asked if she was lost a minute ago.”
That just made everyone else feel even more annoyed.
“Wait, even Paulina doesn’t know how she pulled it off? Did this new girl use some kind of shady trick?”
