Chapter 38 Evelyn Hart, Get on Your Knees
“Oh, why should I?” Evelyn Hart replied coolly, her tone more like that of a stranger than a daughter-in-law.
In her memory, Old Mrs. Miller had always looked down on her.
She thought Evelyn Hart had no family background, no looks, and a bad personality, and thus was unworthy of Ethan Miller. Every time Evelyn Hart visited the old mansion, Old Mrs. Miller would deliberately give the servants the day off, dumping all the household chores on her. No matter how well she did, Old Mrs. Miller would find fault and make
her start over.
The floors had to be scrubbed on her knees, all the family clothes had to be hand-washed, and meals had to consist of eight dishes and one soup, each as good as those in a five-star restaurant.
Even if she met all these standards, Old Mrs. Miller wouldn’t allow her to sit and eat with the family; she had to stand
and serve everyone.
In the Miller mansion, she was nothing more than a cheap, unpaid maid expected to perform at the highest standards.
As a result, even the servants looked down on her, openly calling her a lowly servant to her face.
They said she’d just gotten lucky to marry Ethan Miller and would surely be cast aside sooner or later.
Remembering all this, a surge of anger welled up in Evelyn Hart’s chest, making it hard to let go. Now that she was free, she no longer wanted to please anyone in this family.
“What did you say? Evelyn Hart, is this how you speak to your elders? You’re nothing but trash!” Old Mrs. Miller didn’t hold back, hurling insults at Evelyn Hart.
Evelyn Hart looked up and sneered. “Like attracts like. Since your son married trash like me, what does that make the
rest of you?”
Old Mrs. Miller stared in shock. She’d never imagined Evelyn Hart could be so sharp-tongued.
In the past, no matter how much she’d tormented her, Evelyn Hart had taken it all meekly.
Truth be told, she’d liked that about Evelyn Hart; it satisfied her need for control as a mother-in-law. When she’d married Ethan Miller’s father, the family was in decline, and she’d endured a difficult time with a domineering mother-in-law.
Ethan Miller was strong-willed and often defied her wishes. She’d opposed his marriage to Evelyn Hart, but couldn’t stop him. So, after Evelyn Hart married in, she’d tried to break her spirit to establish her own authority. To her surprise, Evelyn Hart had just endured it all.
Though she never admitted it, Old Mrs. Miller had secretly been pleased with Evelyn Hart’s attempts to please her. Especially in front of other wealthy ladies, who couldn’t control their daughters-in-law, Evelyn Hart’s docility had given her a great deal of face.
Over time, she’d felt free to berate Evelyn Hart at will, never expecting her to fight back. “Evelyn Hart, it seems you’ve grown more and more disrespectful. Get down on your knees!”
Evelyn Hart scoffed and said calmly, “Sorry, your son and I are getting divorce. I have no obligation to kneel for you.”
“If you want to lay down the law, find your future daughter-in-law. You know who that is, right? Leah Foster. Should I call her over for you?”
With that, she took out her phone as if to make the call.
Old Mrs. Miller strode over and smashed the phone to the ground, fuming, “Evelyn Hart, look at yourself. You’re not fit to be the young mistress of the Miller family!” Evelyn Hart grew impatient. She really shouldn’t have come. “Enough. If that’s all you have to say, I’m leaving.”
Old Mrs. Miller flew into a greater rage and instinctively raised her arm to teach Evelyn Hart a lesson.

But Evelyn Hart was ready. The moment she saw the arm coming, she blocked it and said coldly, “Mrs. Miller, we’re strangers now. Stop this.”
Then, Old Mrs. Miller suddenly let herself fall to the ground, wailing, “You good-for-nothing Evelyn Hart, how dare you bully me!”
Before Evelyn Hart could figure out what was happening, she was shoved hard. Her waist slammed into the table, and she winced in pain.
But no one in the room noticed or cared.
Leah Foster rushed to Old Mrs. Miller’s side, helping her up with a scowl. “Dr. Hart, what are you doing? If you have a problem with me, come at me. How can you treat Auntie like this? As a younger generation, how dare you talk back to your elders?”
Ethan Miller also looked at Evelyn Hart coldly. “Evelyn Hart, I thought giving you a lesson would make you see the error of your ways. But you’re hopeless. I used to think you truly respected my mother, but it was all an act.”
“You’ve really let me down. Now, I’m giving you a chance. Apologize to my mother!”
Seeing Leah Foster and Ethan Miller, Evelyn Hart finally understood why Old Mrs. Miller had suddenly played the victim. It turned out that the reinforcements had arrived.
Taking a deep breath, she laughed, her voice even colder than Ethan Miller’s. “You all put on quite a show. Why drag me into it?”
“Oh, right.” Evelyn Hart suddenly laughed as if she’d just realized something. “I’m your only audience. What an
honor…”
Before she could finish, Old Mrs. Miller snapped, “Stop spouting nonsense.”
She clutched her chest, feigning deep hurt. “I know you have many grievances against me. But everything I did was to temper your will and make you better. You’re young and don’t understand my good intentions. But today, you’ve really disappointed me.”
Leah Foster immediately joined in the condemnation. “Dr. Hart, as a doctor, you should have a kind heart. But you’re disrespectful to your elders and cruel to your child. Where’s your medical ethics? You’re going too far. You have to apologize to William and Auntie today.”
Ethan Miller stood beside Leah Foster, silently backing her up.
William Miller also stepped up to Evelyn Hart, hands on hips, and said aggressively, “Mom, even if you apologize, I won’t forgive you.”
Seeing her son and grandson on her side, Old Mrs. Miller felt a secret thrill and said, “Forget it. We’re family. I don’t ask for much. Just go back to the way things were.” “You and Ethan have had a little spat, but a man’s career comes first. He has to deal with women at work. As his supportive wife, you should be more understanding. Threatening divorce all the time is unacceptable.”
Evelyn Hart raised an eyebrow and looked Old Mrs. Miller in the eye, saying each word clearly, “In your dreams.”
Old Mrs. Miller was enraged and dropped all pretenses, threatening, “Evelyn Hart, your parents still don’t know you want a divorce, do they? I heard their health hasn’t been good these past two years.”
“Well, I’m just your mother-in-law, and you can look down on me if you want. But what about your own parents? Do you want to drive them to their graves?”
