EIRLYS’ POV
“I am your mate.”

My breath caught, my heart tripping for just a moment before settling again. Those words from him should have set me alight, and part of me wanted to burn with it. I know I feel something for
him-deeply, undeniably.
Still, even as my pulse stuttered at his confession, a quiet thread of doubt held me back.
“Eirlys,” Kierygan called, his voice sharp enough to pull me back to the moment. “Please… say
something.”
I curled my hands in my lap, torn between reaching for him and shrinking away. “Is this… just another way to gain my trust?” I asked, my voice barely above a whisper. “Making me believe I truly
belong to you, so I won’t run again?”
I wanted to believe him. I ached to. But I was once a girl taught that the air outside would kill me if
I tried to escape.
And maybe him telling me we’re mates… was something like that too. A prettier cage. A sweeter
shackle.
For a fleeting moment, I saw hurt flicker in his eyes. But still, he reached for my hands. “I’m not
telling you this to gain anything or to control you,” he said softly. “I’m telling you because it’s the
truth.”
He brushed a stray lock of hair from my face, letting his fingers linger. “Didn’t we talk about this before?” he asked gently. “That when you find your mate, you can choose to accept or not? I meant
it.”
I shook my head, refusing to let belief settle. “But that can’t be right,” I said. “If it’s true, why can’t I feel the bond? That pull?”
I met his gaze, searching for answers in the depths of his eyes. “Solara said that if I found my mate, I would know. Every fiber of my being would tell me That there would be no doubt… but here I am, doubting you.”
He tightened his hold on my hand, and I felt a tremor run through me. “Our theory is that it’s because of this,” he said, lifting my hand that rested on his and nodding toward the bracelet. “It dampens your powers, weakens you physically. Maybe… it’s also stopping you from feeling the
bond.”
He sighed, the sound heavy with something I couldn’t name. “I want nothing more than to free you of that thing,” he continued. “So no one can use it. Not even me.”

I stayed silent, turning his words over in my mind. What he said about the bracelet dampening me made sense. But still, I gave nothing away-nothing to betray that I wanted to believe him, or that I
was starting to.
“Wait… did you say our theory?” I asked, my voice thick with confusion. “Who else knew?”
“I only told the people I trusted,” he said, his thumb brushing gently over the back of my hand.” Ulyanna, Evander, Orryx, and Callum. Ashteryn… he may have suspected.”
I frowned, confusion knitting my brow. “Why them? Why tell them and not me?”
Kierygan’s gaze softened, lingering on me like he was weighing every word. “Because I thought you
weren’t ready,” he said quietly.
I hesitated, searching his expression, then asked, my voice faint, “When… when did you find out?”
His eyes drifted toward the window before returning to my hand. “At the first blush of spring,” he said, a faint, almost imperceptible smile tugging at his lips, “when I brought you to the meadows
for the very first time.”
I gasped. “The day you gave me a name,” I whispered.
He hummed softly. “You glowed for the first time then,” he said. “I think it awakened the bond. It
snapped into place.”
His gaze lifted to mine, intense and unflinching. “If you only knew how much I wanted to claim you that very instant,” he admitted, his breath catching. But you were just beginning to see the world. You didn’t know what mate bonds meant. It would have been wrong to tell you then that your soul was already tied to mine, when you had just tasted freedom.”
He let out a slow sigh. “So I kept my distance… but watched. Always from afar.”
I fell silent again, my mind drifting back to that day. remembered the sudden shift in his mood- how his warmth had turned suddenly cold. And then… the distance that followed.
I hesitated, then let my voice slip out, tentative. “What… what happens now?”
Kierygan’s gaze softened, calm and steady. “That’s up to you,” he said. “You can accept it… or reject
I swallowed hard, the weight of his words twisting in my stomach.
“And if I… if I reject it?” I asked, my voice barely above a whisper.
“Then
else.”
you say it out loud,” he said simply. “The bond will be broken. You’ll be free… to find someone
My chest tightened, an ache curling inside me. The thought made me shiver. Find someone else…
No. I knew, with a certainty that surprised me, that wouldn’t want anyone else.

“And… if I accept?” I asked cautiously, my cheeks warming at the admission.

Kierygan’s lips curved into a faint, knowing smile. “I think you already know what needs to happen to complete the bond.”
Heat rushed to my face, and I looked away, heart hammering. My pulse thudded in my ears, fierce
and relentless.
“We… actually need to mate?” I whispered, voice barely more than a breath. “And I bear your mark.”
He gave a slow, deliberate nod. “Yes. But like I said I won’t rush you.”
I nodded, and the room fell silent again-a stark contrast to the storm inside me. Fear and doubt
still clung tightly, yet a small, trembling part of me shivered with anticipation.
“I’ll think about it,” I said faintly.
But deep down, my heart had already chosen. The only question left was when I’d be ready to
follow it.
He sighed, but it wasn’t the weary, burdened kind this time. It was something softer, almost
relieved. He stood and picked up the tray again, placing it gently on my lap. “Take all the time you
need,” he said softly. “But for now… you have to eat. It’s getting cold.”
At his words, my stomach betrayed me with a low, insistent growl. My gaze drifted to the tray, to
the familiar dishes I’d once thought I’d never taste again. He brushed his hand through my hair-
slow, deliberate-before offering a small smile. Then he turned and left, closing the door behind
him, leaving me with the warmth of the food, the quiet of the room, and the tangle of my thoughts.
After finishing the last bite of breakfast, I pushed the tray aside and slid out of bed. Only then did I notice I wasn’t wearing my own clothes, but one of Kierygan’s tunics-loose, warm, and carrying the faint, unmistakable scent of him. Heat rose to my cheeks before I could stop it.
The corridor’s cool air brushed against my bare legs as I crossed to my chambers just across the way. Once inside, I shut the door quietly and slipped the tunic over my head.
When my gaze fell on the mirror, my breath caught. My wounds are gone. Not even the faintest scar remained. Danaiah’s healing magic, no doubt… yet another thought whispered through me, softer and far less certain. Could it also be because Kierygan…?
Last night, through the haze, I’d felt something warm, rough, and damp tracing over the raw lines Malric’s whip had left on me. Soothing. Relentless.
“No,” I murmured to myself as I reached for a clean dress. It had to be Danaiah’s balm. That was all.
Once I finished, I left my room and made my way toward the infirmary, intent on checking how Scylla was faring.

I hadn’t even reached the door when sharp, raised voices cut through the corridor. I knew them
instantly-Evander and Scylla.
But this wasn’t their usual playful back-and-forth. This was sharper, rawer-an argument, and a
fierce one at that.
I lingered outside the door, my hand half-raised to knock, debating whether I should turn back
instead.
Before I could decide, Scylla’s voice drifted through the wood, smooth and knowing. “You can
come in, Eirlys.”
I frowned. How did she-?
Still, I pushed the door open and stepped inside.
“I hope I’m not interrupting… whatever was going on,” I said, glancing between them.
Scylla reclined in her chair, the picture of calm. Her green eyes, though miraculously intact, were
unfocused. “Actually, I’m glad you came. You’re a welcome distraction.” Her head angled toward
Evander. “Unlike your friend here.”
Evander gave an affronted scoff, though the flash in his eyes could have been annoyance… or
amusement.
“I’m just telling this stubborn witch,” he said, “that continuing her nomadic life isn’t exactly the brightest idea now that she’s blind. Maybe she should stay put for once.”
