Mirael lingered in the shadow of a stone archway, her gaze lifting to the majestic sweep of silver and blue scales spiraling down from the clouds. The dragon’s descent was a dance of power and grace, each turn catching the light like ripples on water.
A smile tugged at her lips as its talons struck the flagstones with a ringing thud.
She was about to step forward-about to run to him-when movement on the dragon’s back made her pause. Her blood roared in her ears.
Eirlys.
The silver-locked girl slid down the scaled flank, laughter spilling freely from her lips. In the next breath, Kierygan stood where the dragon had been the shift seamless as water over stone.
Their fingers found each other as if it were instinct-hands interlacing, eyes bright, sharing a moment so unguarded it felt like the rest of the world had fallen away.
Heat prickled under Mirael’s skin-rage, sharp and unrelenting. Her fist curled until her nails bit into her palm. She pivoted on her heel, vanishing into the dim corridor before they could see her.
This was not supposed to happen. She should have been far away-tucked in some lightless cell, chained and waiting for the Light Reaper to claim her.
So why in all the hells was Eirlys still here?
Mirael had delivered her to Malric and Morwenna, had made certain Eirlys overheard every damning word in that meeting. Malric’s men had captured her. She’d seen to it herself.
And yet here she was-laughing, standing beside Kierygan as if she belonged there. Whole. Unscathed.
How had he found her?
Malric and Morwenna’s lair was a fortress-layered wards, spells, and traps made it impossible to breach. Mirael knew; she’d hunted them herself once and failed.
As she swept back to her chamber, fury coiled tighter. Why hadn’t she heard of Eirlys’s return last night?
Right. Because she’d been trapped under Ansel.
Her lips curled in disgust. The wolf had treated her like his for the taking-dragging her into shadowed corners, into the cover of dense woods claiming what he wanted with the smug certainty of a man who knew she couldn’t refuse. Not while he held her secrets. Not while her

She finally reached her chambers, intending to gather the things she needed for her journey. She needed to see Morwenna.
Though the two of them could communicate mentally, Ansel’s constant pestering made it impossible to get a clear answer. She had to speak to Morwenna in person-to understand what had really happened.
Her fingers curled around the door handle, ready to shut the world out, when a too-familiar touch slid over her hips.
She stilled, but didn’t turn. She didn’t need to.
“Not now, Ansel,” she said, voice low and flat, but with a blade of warning beneath it. “I have somewhere else to be.”
He chuckled against her ear-low, smooth, and full of mockery. “Oh?” The sound brushed her skin like a warning. “Did you forget who decides when and where?”
His teeth closed on the curve of her ear, not hard enough to hurt, but enough to claim. “You’ve been slipping away a lot lately,” he murmured, his breath hot against her skin. “Tell me, what exactly have you been up to?”
Mirael forced down the fury clawing up her throat. “Just some business I need to attend to.”
His grip tightened, sliding upward to cup her breasts. His fingers tightening with deliberate slowness, as if testing how much pressure she’d bear. “Unofficial, I assume?” His mouth curved into a smile she could feel. “Don’t worry, your secret’s safe with me.”
Her jaw ached from clenching her teeth, anger coiling like a live wire beneath her skin. She could feel the magic sparking, eager to lash out-but she forced it down. Instead, she pressed her lips into a tight, measured smile, eyes cold and glinting with warning.
“Someone might see us,” Mirael said, every word dripping with a warning he might not understand
yet.
“Then let’s go inside,” he said, brushing past the edge of her threat as though it were nothing.
Ansel pushed the door open, and they stepped inside. Without hesitation, he stripped them of their clothing, shoving them onto the bed with a force that left no room for protest.
At first, she stiffened, revulsion coiling tight in her chest. Yet as he pressed against her, a flash of memory stole through her mind-how breathtaking Kierygan had been, both in human form and dragon.
The disgust twisted into a reluctant ache of longing. She closed her eyes, envisioning Kierygan’s hands, his lips, and his manhood inside her instead. The memory alone made her pulse spike and

Ansel growled in approval, sensing her shift, as her hips bucked in sync with his thrusts.

Time passed in a haze of unrestrained need, her thoughts tangled with anger, desire, and reluctant yearning. When it was over, Mirael lay back, panting while Ansel busied himself with dressing.
He straightened and shot her a glance. “Did you hear about Malric? Bastard’s dead at last.”
Shock flared through her. “What? How?”
Ansel arched an eyebrow. “Why do you look like you just heard bad news? You should be glad one of our enemies is finally gone. Considering all the people he murdered… my family included.”
Mirael hesitated, then forced a shrug and a casual tone. “I… I’m surprised, but yes, of course, I’m
glad he’s dead.”
He scoffed. “His head was put on a spike for everyone to see. King’s order,” he said, a sly edge in
his voice. “Took all his anger out on Malric after the abduction… and the way he hurt Eirlys.” He
smirked, adding, “If you ask me, I think the king really adores her.”
Mirael’s jaw tightened at Ansel’s words. She knew he was baiting her, digging for a crack in her composure. And he was right-Kierygan was taken with the girl. The truth sat like ice in her gut, twisting into a cold, simmering resentment she fought to hide.
She curved her lips into a small, measured smile, one that carried an ease she didn’t feel. Her gaze
met his, cool and unreadable, giving him nothing of the storm roiling beneath the surface.
Ansel smirked, clearly pleased with himself, and sauntered toward the door. His hand lingered on
the handle as he glanced back, eyes dark with mischief.
“Catch you again next time, doll,” he said. “And wherever you’re going, don’t take too long… I might get bored waiting.”
He leaned just slightly into the doorway, his voice low and teasing, yet edged with a dangerous undertone. “And you know how I am when I’m bored… I get chatty. Might let slip a few secrets certain people would be very interested in.”
Mirael said nothing, only matching his smirk, wearing it like armor over the fury and envy that burned inside her.
He chuckled, satisfied, and slipped out, the door closing softly behind him.
The instant the door clicked shut and Ansel’s footsteps faded down the corridor, Mirael’s composure shattered. She snatched the wine bottle from the nightstand and hurled it against the wall. Glass exploded, crimson liquid splattering the stone like a war banner.
Her fingers clawed through her hair as she grabbed a pillow and pressed it to her face, screaming
