“I knew there was something oddly familiar about you,” Scylla said, eyes narrowing. “You reek of
Morwenna-she lingers in your mind, reading, whispering, always watching.”
With the tea in full effect, Mirael’s mask slipped. Her tongue, once disciplined, now moved on its
own. The words spilled unchecked.
“You’ve done well, seer,” Mirael mocked, her voice curling with venom. “I was starting to believe
Morwenna when she said you didn’t have a gift at all.”
Scylla only smiled, calm as still water. “If Morwenna’s listening in right now, do pass along a
message.” She leaned back, unhurried, her gaze never wavering from Mirael’s. “Tell her I apologize for the confusion the last time she sought my counsel.”
Her smile widened, faintly wicked. “When I said I don’t see anything, I did not mean I couldn’t see
her future. I meant she won’t have one.”
Mirael’s face twisted with rage, her composure finally fracturing. “We’ll see about that,” she hissed.
“The Light Reaper is coming for you, for all of you. He’ll sweep this wretched kingdom from
existence… and leave your bones in the dust.”
Her fingers twitched, sparks of stolen magic crawling across her skin as she began to rise. But
before she could move an inch further, Ulyanna raised a glowing hand.
Mirael slammed back into her chair as though shackled by iron chains no one could see. Her
breath hitched, her body straining against the invisible binds. Fury burned in her eyes as she
thrashed, cursing us all, but she was no match for Ulyanna’s magic.
“Enough, Mirael!” My voice thundered through the chamber, silencing even her shrieks.
I gave Ulyanna a curt nod. She understood at once.
Mirael’s body jerked violently, head bowing forward until her nape was bared. Ulyanna’s lips moved, her chant low and ancient. The rune etched into Mirael’s skin ignited, flaring like molten iron.
Mirael screamed, raw and piercing. “Help me!” Her voice cracked as she wailed, “Morwenna! Help
me!”
Ulyanna’s chant did not falter. The rune fought back, pulsing darkly, but then it shuddered and broke. With a hiss, it dissolved into smoke, leaving only scorched flesh behind.
I stepped forward, crouching so my eyes were level with hers. She trembled, her breaths ragged, sweat glistening at her temple.
“Now,” I said quietly, my voice sharper. “Start talking.”

Mirael’s lips trembled as Ulyanna’s spell wound tighter around her mind. Her body quivered, caught between resistance and submission, until at last the dam broke, and the words spilled out.
She confessed how she lured Eirlys onto the frozen lake, spooked the horse that left her injured, wove a bloodlust spell upon the vampire nobles, and even played her hand in the recent abduction.
A growl rumbled low in my chest, but I forced myself still, fists tightening against my knees. My claws pressed at the surface, eager to break free. Not yet. Not when I needed every word of their
scheme.
Her voice cracked, rising in pitch as though sheer will might claw past the serum shackling her tongue when I pressed for their next move. “The Light Reaper needed three relics to channel her light into his hands. The first, he already holds. The second… it is to be forged in Lireia. The third…” She faltered, despair cutting across her features. “I have not been told.”
A long silence stretched between us. I straightened in my seat, folding my arms, my gaze cold and unyielding as I looked down at her. “Why?” I asked, my voice low, measured. “Why did you betray me? Why did you betray this kingdom?”
Mirael’s lips curled into a bitter scoff. She mirrored my question, tilting her head with insolence. Why?” Her tone sharpened, cutting through the tension. “It’s because of that girl. Everything was going just fine between us… until you brought her here.”
I shook my head slowly, letting the words land before I spoke. “You’re wrong,” I said, my voice steady, unshaken. “Everything was over long before Eirlys arrived.”
”
Her eyes flickered, but I pressed on, each word deliberate, deliberate enough to leave no room for misinterpretation. “When you proposed the idea of giving me an heir, I made it clear it was only for the kingdom’s stability. Nothing more. Nothing else”
I leaned forward, eyes narrowing. “And in case it still isn’t clear,” I ground out, teeth tight, “there
would be no one else for me. Eirlys is my true mate!
Mirael’s eyes blazed with defiance. “Not for long,” she spat. “When the Light Reaper rises… when he forges his new world, you will belong to me. And your precious Eirlys… she will be erased.”
A soft, humorless chuckle cut through her threat. Scylla’s gaze flicked toward Mirael, calm and
measured. “Clearly,” she said, voice even, “you do not understand how bonds work.”
I had heard enough. My patience had thinned to a razor’s edge. “You will burn soon,” I said quietly, each word deliberate, icy with promise.
I tilted my head toward Ulyanna. At once, she flicked her hand, and a collar of enchanted iron
sprang into place around Mirael’s neck to dampen her magic. Three warriors stepped in
immediately, surrounding her like wolves encircling prey.
“Lock her up,” I barked, my voice cold and unyielding. “Keep constant watch. No one speaks to her.

The guards obeyed without hesitation, hauling Mirael to her feet. She thrashed and screamed, her
voice echoing through the halls, spitting venom at me. “You’re making a mistake, Kierygan! You’ll
regret this! Everyone will!”
Her threats kept coming-directed at me, at Eirlys, at anyone within earshot-until she was finally
out of sight, her voice fading into the distance.
My breath came ragged, chest tight with fury. The fire inside me threatened to erupt. I needed air,
needed to cool down. I strode toward the door, leaving the two witches and Ansel behind.
Just a few steps from the study, she appeared. Eirlys-radiant, calm, clutching Nibbles to her
chest, her eyes shimmering with worry.
I closed the distance, cupping her face, my thumbs brushing along her cheekbones. “Why are you
here?” I asked, voice low, taut. “You should be training with Callum.”
She tilted her head, fingers ghosting over the mark at the crook of her neck, her gaze unwavering
and luminous. “I felt you,” she murmured. “I felt your anger… and I thought… I should check if you
were alright.”
The tension in me shifted, melting into a rare, quiet relief. “I am now,” I murmured, my voice
dropping even lower as I pulled her close, letting the warmth of her body chase away the last
remnants of the storm in my chest.
We lingered like that for a few moments before footsteps echoed behind me. I stiffened, eyes
narrowing. It was Ansel.
He dropped to his knees before her, head bowed in earnest.
“Thank you, my Lady,” he said, voice rough with emotion. “For… for healing me. For saving my life.
And… I wanted to ask your forgiveness.” He swallowed hard, hesitation rattling him. “I should have
come forward about Mirael sooner. I didn’t…”
Tears ran down his face, but Eirlys placed a steadying hand on his shuddering shoulder. “There’s
nothing to forgive, sir,” she said gently. “You made.. bad decisions, but it was because of them that
we discovered Mirael’s betrayal.”
I pulled Eirlys’ hand from his shoulder and cleared my throat. “Rise,” I commanded, voice firm. ” You’re fortunate my mate is both forgiving and giving. Let this be a lesson to you-and a warning.”
Ansel nodded, swallowing hard, and rose to his feet. He gave a respectful nod to both of us before
walking away, leaving us alone once more.
The very next morning, I summoned the council to deliver the verdict that could no longer be

Mirael would be executed. She would burn. And it would be by my fire.

At first, a few voices rose in dissent-hesitant to condemn one of their own despite her treachery. But once Ulyanna and Scylla gave their account, and I brought Ansel before them, the protests
faltered.
