Chapter 174: The Aurora’s Secret

After Danaiah left, the room felt a little too quiet. I sat there for a while, staring at the tray Grace had brought-slices of fruit, a bit of bread, some broth. I tried-truly tried-to eat like Kierygan told me to, but after a few bites, I gave up. Everything just tasted wrong.
With a sigh, I pushed the tray away.
Nibbles stirred from his little nest by the window, his ears twitching before he hopped over and settled in my lap. A faint smile tugged at my lips. I stroked his soft fur, then slid the unfinished bowl
of fruit toward him. “Here,” I murmured. “You can have this.”
As I watched the spoiled rabbit devour the fruit, my thoughts drifted back to Kierygan. He was about to tell me something earlier. I knew it.
There was something that worried him-something he didn’t want to tell me. Kierygan might think I
hadn’t noticed how tense he’d gone when I mentioned the Light Reaper, but I did.
The Light Reaper was gone. So were Morwenna and Mirael. But his final words still haunted me.
And I couldn’t help but wonder if Kierygan’s unease had something to do with them.
He’d said that I would meet the same fate as him. That my mother had broken the most sacred
law of the universe-and that I would be the one to pay the price.
At the time, I’d been too distracted by everything happening around me to think about what he
meant. But now… now it felt as if every word was crawling back into my mind.
The more I thought about it, the more convinced I became that this was what weighed on
Kierygan.
I remembered how, each time the Light Reaper tried to speak, Kierygan would stop him-or how
he’d tell me not to listen to him.
I sighed and lifted Nibbles into my arms. “Do you think he’s keeping something from me?” I asked
the rabbit softly. He couldn’t answer, of course-but I knew he listened.
I would’ve asked Kierygan about it, but I didn’t know when he’d be back. So instead, I rose to my
feet, Nibbles still nestled against me. “Come on, Nibbles,” I whispered, pressing him closer. “Let’s
find some answers.”

The corridors were dim, pools of light spilling from sconces as I made my way to the library. The
great doors loomed ahead, massive and imposing, yet I didn’t hesitate. I pushed them open and
stepped inside, letting the familiar scent of parchment and ink wrap around me like a quiet, comforting shroud.

I set Nibbles down gently on the floor. He sniffed at the shelves before hopping onto one of the cushioned chairs in the reading nook, looking entirely too comfortable.
I was eyeing a book, my fingers tracing the spine, when a familiar voice broke the stillness.
“Well, I’m glad to see you looking well,” Evander said as he stepped around the corner with that effortless grace of his. A faint smile tugged at his lips as his gaze swept over me. “Doing some reading today?”
I blinked, caught off guard, then shrugged lightly. “I have nothing else to do,” I said. “Kierygan wants me to stay put while he’s gone.”
Evander chuckled softly. “Ah, yes. The King’s orders” He leaned against a nearby shelf, his tone light but his gaze knowing. “He means well, you know. He was… miserable while you were unconscious. For five days, he barely left your bedside.”
“I know,” I murmured. My chest tightened, guilt flickering faintly beneath my ribs. I could almost picture him there.
Still, I needed answers-something, anything that might explain what the Light Reaper had said. I looked up at Evander, trying to sound casual. “Do you happen to know where I can find anything
about the universe?”
His brows lifted slightly, a hint of curiosity crossing his face before he replied. “The universe is a rather vast topic,” he said. “What exactly are you hoping to find?”
I hesitated, the words catching in my throat. “Its laws,” I said quietly, hoping he wouldn’t notice the
tremor in my voice.
For a moment, Evander didn’t answer. His easy composure wavered-just slightly. A faint tightening around his eyes, a subtle flicker along his jaw. If I hadn’t been watching him so closely, I would’ve missed it. Then, just as quickly, it was gone, replaced by his usual smooth smile.
“The laws of the universe,” he echoed lightly. “Now, that’s something few dare to study. But if you wish to learn about them… you must first begin with who created the universe itself.”
I blinked, caught off guard. “The Celestial Guardians?”
He nodded, his smile deepening. “Precisely. They created the universe-and naturally, its laws.”
Lifting a hand, he gestured toward one of the towering aisles, “You’ll find texts about them there- third shelf from the right. Some written before the kingdoms rose, others preserved by scholars.”
“Thank you,” I said softly.
With a small nod, I hurried toward the aisle he’d indicated. I pulled down every book that so much as hinted at creation, celestial beings, or the origins of cosmic order-until my arms were full of tomes that smelled of parchment, dust, and time itself.

When I returned to the reading nook, Nibbles was still curled into a small ball of fur on the chair, blissfully unbothered.
“Let’s see what secrets you’re hiding,” I murmured, setting the stack down and opening the first
tome.
The sun had long set by the time Nibbles and I returned to my chambers. I hadn’t realized how
much time had passed-Evander was right. The universe was far too vast a thing to unravel in a
single sitting.
The scent of food greeted me the moment I stepped inside. Dinner waited neatly on the table, still
steaming. Someone must have come in while I was gone. I sat down and forced a few bites past
my throat, but my stomach churned halfway through. With a resigned sigh, I pushed the plate toward Nibbles, who accepted my unfinished meal with eager delight.
Kierygan still wasn’t back. I knew he must be busy, so I didn’t try to reach him-but the quiet
gnawed at me all the same.
I rose from the chair and drifted to the balcony. The night air was cool, carrying the faint scent of
pine and melting snow. Above, the aurora stretched across the heavens in ribbons of emerald and
violet. I had seen it countless times, yet it still stole my breath.
I leaned forward, eyes tracing the shifting light. There was something about it tonight-something
