The Ending She Read (And the One He Rewrote) novel Chapter 41

She had spent over two hours on that puzzle.

But actually getting the divorce papers took less than ten minutes.

Thinking back to how her eyes had gleamed with excitement while working on that puzzle last night, Harriet felt incredibly foolish.

She didn't even care to look at how much money Jason was planning to give her; she flipped straight to the last page and aggressively signed her name.

The very next second.

Knock, knock!

The doctor pushed the door open, freshly printed test results in hand. "Mr. Whitaker, ma'am, the results are back. It's not a blood condition."

No one answered.

The air in the hospital room was so thin it felt suffocating.

The doctor quickly continued, "It's just a common bacterial infection. Once the IV fluids are finished, we'll monitor her for a bit, and she should be perfectly fine."

With that, the doctor practically fled the room.

Jason flipped through the medical report and then looked at Harriet, his gaze faltering.

Her face was pale, and a fine layer of sweat had beaded on her forehead.

Harriet was gripping one of Seraphina's little hands with both of hers, tears spilling from her eyes.

It was as if... she had just survived a disaster.

And those divorce papers she had been so fixated on—ready to scratch his eyes out over just a second ago—were now tossed carelessly on the nightstand. She didn't even spare them a glance.

Wasn't she afraid he'd give her absolutely nothing and leave her to walk away empty-handed?

Buzz!

Buzz!

The vibration of a phone sounded exceptionally harsh in the quiet room.

Jason pulled it out, glanced at the screen, and turned to walk out.

The door clicked shut, and the room returned to silence.

The little hand in her grasp was gradually warming up.

She reached out to touch Seraphina's forehead again; it was warm, but clearly not burning hot like before.

Harriet let out a soft sigh of relief.

Yet, her heart felt like a block of ice.

If the price of not following the novel's predetermined plot meant that Seraphina, who was supposed to be lost, would just keep getting sick over and over again...

Then what was she supposed to do at this exact time next month?

Would she really have to take Archer and jump off a building?

Just a few days ago, she had been blissfully dreaming of securing a massive alimony payout and living her best life as a rich, single woman.

Now, in the blink of an eye, just staying alive was an issue?

Harriet wanted to curse.
