The Ending She Read (And the One He Rewrote) novel Chapter 39

[Jason, Seraphina has a high fever that won't go down. Meds and shots didn't work. I've headed back!]

[I'm so sorry, I didn't mean to stand you up!]

Tossing her phone aside, Harriet looked at the green trees and bright lights rushing past the window, her tangled heart gradually calming down.

A speeding car whizzed past in the opposite direction, its high beams flashing across her eyes.

In a flash of insight, Harriet realized.

This was the price for deviating from the plot!

At this point in the book, Jason had already moved out of the villa. Whether he came to Portsmouth for a business trip, she didn't know.

But she definitely hadn't come.

First, a scraped hand in the greenhouse.

Now, a persistent high fever.

What would be next?

She didn't dare think any further.

Her mind was filled with only one thought: she had to get the divorce papers as soon as possible.

The car stopped at the entrance of the vacation villa. The moment the door slid open a crack, Harriet dashed out and rushed inside.

The strong smell of disinfectant hit her face. In the living room, a team of doctors stood up one after another. “Mrs. Whitaker...”

Harriet ran towards the children's room.

The room felt like a steamer.

Such a small source of heat, yet it made the air agonizingly hot.

“Mommy...” Seraphina lay weakly on the bed. On one side were the frantically worried Lana and Teresa, and on the other was Archer, holding her hand.

The little girl's cheeks were flushed red from the fever. Seeing Harriet, she pouted, her eyes instantly reddening.

Harriet stripped off her gloves, threw them aside, stepped forward, and picked Seraphina up.

Her body was as hot as a little furnace, burning so much it made Harriet's heart ache, tears threatening to fall. “It's okay, it's okay. Do you remember the book about the White Cell Guards Mommy read to you? Right now, the White Guards and the Red Guards are fighting hard to destroy those nasty germs so Seraphina can get better...”

“Mommy is here, don't be scared!”

Gently patting Seraphina's back, Harriet paced back and forth in the room.

She didn't know how much time had passed, but the little arms tightly hugging her neck gently dropped.

Seraphina had fallen asleep.

Motioning for Lana to take Archer to rest, Harriet held her a while longer. Only when Seraphina was in a deep sleep did she carefully place her back on the bed.
