Jillian's heart was a tangled mess. She knew that once she finalized her divorce from Killian Quincy, she wouldn't get custody of Connor, meaning her mother would see her grandson even less.
She had rushed into the marriage without warning, a decision Judith had never truly supported.
She couldn't keep the divorce a secret anymore.
"Mom, Killian is divorcing me," Jillian said quietly.
A moment of dead silence hung in the night air.
"What are your plans?" Judith finally asked.
"I agreed to it."
Judith sighed, then suddenly smiled. "It's for the best."
"The Quincy family is too elite. We were always reaching out of our league."
As she spoke, tears began to stream down Judith's face.
Then, as if to comfort herself, she added, "It's a good thing you're leaving. I never needed you to marry a rich man. I just wanted you to find someone who truly understood you, someone who would cherish you and build a good life with you."
Jillian smiled. That was probably the purest wish every mother had for her daughter.
But she had finally figured it out. A woman didn't need to get married or find a so-called "good man" to be complete.
The most important thing for a woman was her own career. Romance and marriage were not absolute necessities in life.
"What about Connor?"
"I won't fight for custody. Staying with the Quincys is better for his future."
The sound of Judith sniffing echoed in the dark. She had raised Connor with her own two hands; the thought of letting him go tore at her heart.
"Whatever you choose, I will support you."
"I know."
"I'm working at Daniel's company now. I might have to go overseas for a two-year training program, but after that, I'll be based back here permanently," Jillian explained, wanting to prepare her mother.
"That's fine. Do whatever you need to do. I'll take good care of Lydia."
"No! I want to go home right now. If you don't come with me, I'll leave by myself!"
Connor threatened.
He knew his mother usually gave him whatever he wanted.
As he grew older, he had also picked up on the gossip. He knew he was important to her—he was the only reason she had managed to marry his dad.
Judith walked over with a fruit platter. "What's going on?"
Noticing Connor's anger, she approached him gently. "What is it, Connor? Grandma cut your favorites..."
Connor slapped her hand away, sending the platter crashing to the ground. "I don't like it! I don't like you, and I don't like her! I hate it here!"
Judith froze.
Hearing the commotion from inside, Lydia thought someone had gotten hurt and hurried out. "Who's bullying our little Connor? Tell Great-Grandma..."
Pushing past the brink of a tantrum, Connor violently shoved Lydia's hand away and screamed, "Don't touch me! I don't like you either!"
