Judith and Lydia were completely stunned.
Dead silence hung in the air.
Jillian's eyes instantly welled up. "I'm sorry, Mom. I'm sorry, Grandma Lydia. It's my fault for spoiling him."
"Connor! Apologize to them right now," she commanded.
"No!" Connor turned his back, his little face tight with defiance.
He didn't believe his mother would actually punish him.
She had never raised her voice at him his entire life.
Besides, if she even tried to punish him, his grandmother and father wouldn't allow it.
"Connor..." Jillian's tone turned stern.
Judith softly interjected, "Let it go, he's still young..."
Lydia also tried to ease the tension. "Kids are just like this. He'll understand when he's older."
Given the sour mood, Jillian had no choice but to take her son and leave.
The alleyway was long, twisting, and dimly lit, with only a single streetlamp at the far end casting a faint, yellowish glow.
Jillian and Connor walked side by side, both looking thoroughly upset.
"Connor, you really disappointed me today."
Connor bit his lip stubbornly.
"Your grandma and great-grandma love you so much. Acting like that hurts their feelings," Jillian continued, desperate for her son to understand.
"But I just wanted you to come home with me! I hate coming here, is that a crime?"
Connor pressed his lips together, his face a mask of indignation.
That cold, indifferent expression was a mirror image of Killian's.
Jillian took a deep breath. "When you were little..."
"I don't want to hear it! I don't want to hear it!"
As if purposely defying her, Connor clamped his hands over his ears and shook his head in absolute refusal.
Jillian shot him a deeply disappointed look, finally dropping the subject.
The drive back was suffocatingly silent.
Connor stared out the window, his small face completely rigid. It was impossible to tell what he was thinking.
When the car pulled into The Yale Residences, Jillian got out with Connor.
Killian's friends all knew she existed, yet not a single one had ever looked her in the eye.
Everyone despised her. They hated her, acting as if her very presence was a stain on Killian's life.
"Sylvia!" Connor suddenly shouted.
The group turned toward the sound. Panic seized Jillian, and she hurriedly ducked behind the car.
Connor trotted over as fast as his little legs could carry him. "Sylvia, is it really you?"
"Connor! Why are you out here all by yourself?" Sylvia asked.
Seeing the genuine concern on Sylvia's face, and remembering how strictly his mother had scolded him earlier, a wave of profound grievance washed over Connor. His bottom lip quivered, and he burst into loud sobs.
"What's wrong? Who bullied our little Connor? Tell me, and I'll make them pay!"
Sylvia crouched down in front of him, gently wiping his tears away with a handkerchief.
The softer she was, the more wronged Connor felt. His tears spilled over like broken pearls, rolling down his cheeks.
"What happened?" Killian demanded.
Thoroughly consumed by his own misery, Connor hiccuped and sobbed. "Dad... Daddy, I don't want Mom... I don't want her to be my mom anymore..."
Killian frowned, his sharp gaze cutting through the darkness straight toward the parked car.
