"Yes, right away, sir," Mrs. Zeller replied quickly.
Killian stood up and strode out of the room without looking back.
The household expenses had always been tightly controlled by Mrs. Zeller.
Jillian received an allowance of fifteen thousand dollars a month.
Outside of that, any purchases for clothes, designer bags, or jewelry had to be explicitly approved by Killian.
But she had never asked him for a single thing.
Her walk-in closet only held a few basic outfits and plain shoes. Not a single designer label could be found.
Mrs. Zeller gloated as she came over to clear the table, her eyes darting over Jillian with unmistakable mockery.
Jillian knew exactly what this was—it was Killian's way of punishing her.
She stood up, her face completely expressionless.
"Wash your own dishes!" Mrs. Zeller snapped coldly.
Given Mrs. Zeller's standing in the house, she was never actually required to do manual chores. Killian had brought her here simply to live out her retirement in comfort.
But whenever Killian was around, Mrs. Zeller loved to put on a show of bustling about.
"We have a full kitchen staff. Why wouldn't I use them?" Jillian shot back.
"The staff are paid by the Quincys! Why should they serve you?" Mrs. Zeller demanded arrogantly.
"Because I am Killian's wife. Do you want to call my mother-in-law and ask her if I'm allowed to use the staff in my own house?"
"You—!" Mrs. Zeller was furious.
Leaving her speechless, Jillian went upstairs, grabbed her things, and left for work.
Stepping outside and getting into her car, she felt an unprecedented wave of clarity.
She had swallowed her pride for far too long. The Quincys looked down on her and bullied her endlessly.
Even the staff thought they could walk all over her.
She had to learn to fight back. She refused to be the coward she once was.
Although she had been out of the industry for years, Jillian possessed incredible natural talent. After just a few days of training, she was already back up to speed with the workflow.
And since that morning, Killian hadn't come home.
...
"Our team has been stuck on this control algorithm for six months. The data flow analysis is completely deadlocked."
Daniel Langley rubbed his temples in frustration.
Jillian felt an undeniable urge. She desperately wanted to ask if she could take a crack at it.
But remembering how long she had been out of the loop and that she was currently just an intern, she swallowed her words.
Suddenly, her phone rang.
Natalie's voice was aggressive from the second it connected.
"What do you want?"
"Get over here right now. I have an errand for you."
Jillian took a deep breath, keeping her voice as steady as possible. "I can't leave."
"What do you mean you can't leave? It's not like you do anything at home anyway. Cut the crap, it's an absolute emergency. Get here now."
Before Jillian could respond, Natalie hung up and texted her an address.
Jillian hesitated, torn.
"Go ahead," Daniel said. "There's nothing pressing on the schedule for the afternoon anyway. Take my car." He tossed his keys across the desk.
Jillian stood up and gave him a grateful nod.
The Royal Garden Hotel was an iconic seven-star hotel known for its stunning European architecture. Even from a distance, the massive white marble fountain was breathtaking.
A lavish party was in full swing on the sprawling lawn—a standard Tuesday for Natalie.
Uniformed security stood guard at the entrance.
Jillian only got past them by dropping Natalie's name. She searched the massive lawn before finally spotting her.
Natalie was sprawled out lazily on a sun lounger, wearing dark sunglasses and clearly buzzed, completely forgetting she was the one who demanded Jillian come in the first place.
When she finally noticed Jillian standing over her, it took her a solid minute to process it.
