Killian Quincy couldn't recall the name of Jillian Jarrett's mother at the moment, only remembering that Jillian had taken her mother's maiden name.

Connor Quincy spoke up first. "We're looking for my grandmother."

The neighbor stared for a moment and instantly recognized the boy. "You're Connor, right? Your grandma used to talk about you all the time. You've gotten so tall."

She reached out to ruffle his hair, but Connor instinctively frowned and dodged her hand.

The neighbor didn't take offense and started rambling on her own. "You didn't know? Your grandmother moved away a long time ago. God knows which jerk reported this house, claiming it was state property. The factory went under years ago, but someone just had to dig up the past."

"But we heard," the neighbor gossiped eagerly, "that the one who reported it was Jillian's father. Can you believe how wicked that is? He gets a divorce, abandons his kid, and still has the nerve to report them..."

Killian waited patiently for the woman to finish her rant, then nodded. "Thank you."

He took Connor's hand and turned away.

Watching their retreating backs, the neighbor secretly curled her lip. She had heard Jillian married a wealthy man, but she had never seen him visit. Jillian had always brought the child back alone. Now that she finally saw him, he was indeed rich, but his temper was so cold—it left a terrible impression.

On the way back, Connor's expectations plummeted, and he felt downcast. "Dad, what does it mean she moved away?"

"It means she doesn't live there anymore."

"They were doing fine there, why did they have to move?"

Killian remained silent. He didn't know either.

"Why didn't she tell me they were moving? Where am I supposed to find her now?" Connor's lips quivered, his voice uncontrollably taking on a tearful edge. "Am I never going to see my grandma again?"

"I don't think so." Killian didn't know how to comfort the child.

But Judith had always doted on Connor; she wouldn't just vanish and cut off all contact.
