"Knock on the door," Killian said with a slight nod.

Connor raised his hand and politely knocked, his force neither too light nor too heavy.

But the apartment remained dead silent. There was no response.

Growing anxious, he knocked harder, pounding twice. "Grandma, it's Connor. I came to see you."

Still, no one answered.

Connor's small face paled, the light in his eyes slowly fading.

Even Killian frowned slightly. The information he had his team verify couldn't possibly be wrong.

Just then, the door across the hall opened. A neighbor poked her head out, looking annoyed. "Who are you looking for?"

"I'm looking for my grandma. She lives here," Connor said quickly.

"She moved away ages ago. That apartment was sold last year," the neighbor said casually, slamming her door shut before either of them could react.

"Moved away?"

Connor stood frozen, his bright, clear eyes instantly dimming as a crushing wave of disappointment washed over him.

A pang of sorrow hit Killian's chest. He reached out and gently stroked the child's head, whispering comfortingly, "I'm sorry, this is my fault. This is an old address. I thought they were still living here."

"So Dad didn't know either..." Connor muttered softly, his voice thick with grievance.

The father and son turned and left the building in silence.

On the drive back, Killian took the wheel himself, pressing his tongue against the inside of his cheek, a frown creasing his brow.

Jillian had specifically bought that apartment as a peaceful retirement home for her mother. Why would they sell it after only living there for a few years? Had they run into financial trouble, or did something happen?

The thought vanished as quickly as it came, and he didn't dwell on it.
