A few more days of rest passed.
The scrape on her knee had mostly healed, and walking was no longer an issue.
However, the wound had formed a thick, raised scab that was agonizingly itchy and tight.
It was almost guaranteed to leave a permanent scar.
Jillian had tried calling Mrs. Zeller multiple times a day. Unsurprisingly, she was ignored every time.
But today, she only tried once.
When Mrs. Zeller hung up, she didn't bother trying again.
Deep down, she knew the Quincy estate would take perfect care of him.
No matter how much Killian despised her, Connor was his only child.
That evening, Daniel called.
"How's the leg holding up?"
"Much better. I'm walking fine now."
"Good. I have a business dinner tonight, and I need you to come with me."
Jillian didn't decline.
After getting married, she had systematically cut ties with all her friends to appease the Quincys, dedicating her entire existence to Killian and Connor.
Daniel was the only friend she had left.
Every now and then, he dragged her to networking events.
His reasoning was that she needed real-world exposure so she wouldn't become completely feral.
Jillian got ready and headed to the restaurant.
When she arrived, she realized it wasn't just Daniel. Several high-level executives from Langley Tech were already there.
They were all in sharp suits, their expressions dead serious.
"Who exactly are we hosting?"
"The regional director for Rohmbach Automotive."
Jillian's heart skipped a beat.
Rohmbach was a century-old German luxury brand, boasting some of the best automotive hardware on the planet.
Every tech firm wanted a partnership with them to elevate their own smart-car systems.
Daniel offered a diplomatic smile.
"I completely understand. Business is about maximizing returns."
"Allow me to introduce Jillian Jarrett. She's one of the lead engineers on our algorithm team," Daniel pivoted smoothly.
Jillian gave Hans a polite nod.
"Chat with him. I need to use the restroom," Daniel whispered to her.
"Me?" Jillian panicked.
"Yeah. Just keep him talking."
Daniel patted her shoulder and excused himself from the table.
It dawned on Jillian that Daniel wanted her to showcase Project Astra's core tech to change Hans's mind.
"Hans," Jillian started.
Hans, already brimming with corporate arrogance, looked at the plainly dressed woman and couldn't hide the flicker of disdain in his icy blue eyes.
"Jillian, what is your assessment of the current automated driving market?" Hans asked, offering a painfully generic question.
